Is This What You Call Change?

Jon Stewart (Yes, That Jon Stewart) has a very pointed and very funny piece about the the same ol' rhetoric being treated in a whole new way thanks to the golden lips that deliver it.

Kudos to Stewart for being one of the only people to point out the obvious during yesterday's lovefest.

Yes, he talks just like every other politician. What scares me is what he going to do because his banal rhetoric is just a cover for his socialist policies.

A big chunk of folks who voted for him don't even know what his policies are. They voted for the rhetoric. We really are up the proverbial creek.

Now that was funny. I suppose John Stewart was not among the mimes in a previous CMR post. The melted cheese line was by far my favorite.

I love take-no-prisoners comedy. Say, it looks like CMR has embraced change as well. Nice new theme.

I think that out of an hour or so long speech there is a bit more to be had than just the small clips this satirical show has to display. These are American values, that we will live free, prosperous, peaceful lives, whether coming from the mouth of Bush or Obama. What you need to pay attention to is the differences in policy, because thats where any change will come from. So lets see, 1. He's an environmentalist. Now really, is that so bad? 2. He wants to remove our troops from Iraq. Congress already told Bush he had to begin our withdrawl, and Bush came up with a military surge, which was supposed to prepare for this same removal of troops. 3 He wants to stimulate the economy and reform healthcare. Really, anyone who has a problem with that is just un-American. They are both needed.

Now, if you remember way back in government class, the president has executive power, while congress holds the legislative power. Thus the president does not have the power to make laws, amend the constitution, or to socialize any part of the government. Most people's fears, when analyzed from a logical standpoint, are unreasonable. I think that the only American thing to do is to hope he does a great job. Whether you are republican, democrat, libertaian, or independent, we must support our president (given that he has the country's best interests at heart), support our troops (whether or not you agree with their prescense in foreign lands), and work for a stronger, better America, knowing that the president, congress, or anyone cannot do it alone. We need to stand united America, now more than ever!

I have tried viewing this post in several browsers and there's just a big white space where the video should be. Would it be possible to post the URL for it?

Sorry for the trouble!

Fr. Andrew said...

Vincent- I would heartily disagree with your comment. I think that the only American thing to do is to hope he does a great job. Whether you are republican, democrat, libertaian, or independent, we must support our president

The exact question is: what does support mean? Is support equal to simple approval of every word or executive decision? Or does true support allow for criticism: from the street sweeper to the CEO (ignore Joe the Plumber jokes). A United America is a critical America- in the best sense of the term.

If a man truly loves America he will always measure it by the ideals of the Constitution and the Declaration and he will call her and her leaders to aspire to and achieve those ideals. You give the caveat given that he has the country's best interests at heart. Those are exactly the things that I would challenge about President Obama. Those are the exact things that I challenged about President Bush. Those are the exact things missing from the political rhetoric heard yesterday. This absence of clear expression is exactly what Jon Stewart was laughing and crying about. That is exactly why it is funny.

"we must support our president"

The people that say we must support our president now, didn't support the last president (even when he had the country's best interests at heart).

materialist said...

"we must support our president ... support our troops ... and work for a stronger, better America ..."

But suppose the President does not support our troops, and pursues policies that make for a weaker, worse America. What "must" we do then?

In the same vein, so many are now saying that even Catholics and conservatives should "wish Obama success." Success at what? Promoting abortion and infanticide? Destroying Israel? Changing into a person who respects and supports human life? Without a definition of "success" the wish is fatuous.

Mau said...

I believe my "obligation" to support President Obama ends with prayer. I may be still feeling quite bitter, but that is all I can muster for him at this point.

Vincent said...

KEEP IN MIND, NOBODY SHORT OF GOD HIMSELF IS PERFECT! No politician is going to line up exactly with your views of what is right for America. But when it comes down to it, we can all agree this country NEEDS change. And frankly, i simply cannot see Obama doing worse for this country than Bush did. You talk about people not supporting Bush. Strange, I would think that people would love the president who has brought on the largest financial deficit the country has ever known, as well as leading the country into a recession unheard of since the great depression. I don't see how anyone can support that. Just cause he's against abortion? Do you forget that he is in favor of the death penalty? Talk about respect for human life! How hypocritical can you be? Regardless, these are NOT important issues. Sure, in a way they are, but look at the grand scheme of things. Our country is failing, dying right now. We obviously need reform of government programs, reform of the education system, and reform of the healthcare system, among other things. Now if you think Bush or McCain would have EVER brought about these necessary changes I think you are kidding yourself. These are the important issues. This is where we need change. And hopefully change will come. It'd be nice if he legalized pot too. I mean, seriously, if it is legal to drink yourself to death, it should be legal to smoke a plant which it truly is impossible to overdose on. Not to mention the fact that it leaves you in better control of yourself than alcohol does.

Now so far as suppoting our troops, BUSH DOESN'T!!! Trust me, my fiance` is in the army right now. Do you know why we're still in Iraq and Afganistan? Bush was told how many troops it would take in Iraq, and he sent a fraction of that, went in weakly, and has obviously stayed too long. Sure, democrats are not in favor of war, but they know how to clean house and get out. Just look at FDR and Truman. Instead we are still fighting this insurgence, and our troops are dying every day. This idea that using the troops is supporting the troops is backwards and illogical. And, simply, evil. And Afganistan? Don't even get me started. Bottom line: there is NO way we should still be there. Bush has made for a weak, vulnerable America. And yet, he was our president, and I support him, even though I hate what he's done to the country. The position of president is a difficult one, and he was simply not cut out for the job. And finally, look at the number of israeli deaths and look at the number of palistinian deaths within this last leg of the conflict. last I checked it was something like 10 Israelis dead and 1384 Gazans dead, with over 4000 wounded. Destroying Israel. Funny. I think Israel has got things under control. But i do beleive to a point that Israel's fighting is justified. They are defending their homeland. Which again raises the question: Why in the world are we in Iraq?

Brendan said...

Nice video.

Vincent, remember that many of us who voted for McCain did so because he is not Obama. Those whoe voted for McCain do not necessarily agree with all his policies. However, there is NOTHING that can outweigh the evil of abortion, which Obama adamantly supports and promotes.

Bush was a great president. Sure, he had some hiccups, but overall, he was a champion for life. Obama is the opposite, a promoter of the culture of death.

I realize the situation in Iraq is difficult, and it is unfortunate that troops have died. However, need I remind you have many children have been slaughtered by abortion since the war started?

Frank said...

Do we now think that we are Americans who happen to be Catholic? I am a Catholic who happens to be an American!!! I can thus never support a president when doing so means complicity in violating God's commandments. "For those who seek to advance their aims... by slaughtering innocents... we will defeat you"?!?!! What hypocrisy from the lips of Barack Hussein (his real middle name) Obama-- who promised Planned Parenthood that he would sign the Freedom Of Choice Act. (That legislation, btw, will eliminate every restriction on abortion nationwide, compel unwilling taxpayers to fund those abortions, and prevent any future pro-life measures from being enacted. So why is the death penalty ok and abortion not?

Anonymous said...

I couldn't see the video, either, so I upgraded my Adobe Flash and re-started my browser and now I can see it fine.

PS Vincent, the Church says that the death penalty is only appropriate in extreme circumstances where society could not otherwise be protected from an individual, which is a rare situation in the first world. It says that abortion is never acceptable. We must fight both. Unfortunately, the massive number of innocents slaughtered by abortion in a day far outnumbers the number of criminals who are killed by the death penalty in a year in the US. Thankfully, we have faithful Catholics working to end both.

Laura said...

The difference between the death penalty and abortion:
The death penalty executes someone who has been convicted, in a court of law, of a heinous act against another human being.
Abortion murders a small, helpless human being whose only crime was inconviencing his/her mommy.
I can see why you would confuse the two.
And that's not even bringing up the other victim of abortion: the mother herself, who is not informed of the effects an abortion will have on her body and her mental well being.

Vincent, I find your reference to the separation of powers interesting, but point out that you failed to include the U. S. Supreme Court which gave us abortion (not Congress), and gay rights (not Congress). Are you picking and choosing or can you connect all the dots? The truth is the socialists and liberals have been working for decades to undermine the constitution, not because they have the best interests of the country at heart, but because they have an agenda from which the constitution was intended to protect us. Did you ever wonder, while in school, how you could hear about the rights of our Creator in American History and not hear about our Creator in Biology?

It has been a long time since any school taught us to think for ourselves. We depend on political correctness to guide our thinking. Obama's change, if he is successful, will not make you happy. Are you not listening?

Our great country needs change, but not to the LEFT. I pray that our leaders in washinton begin to THINK, instead of following the dubious policies of their fellow senators and congressmen.

Vincent, your attirude is typical of people that forget we were attacked starting with Clinton but only during the Bush administrations did we finally find security. We DID need to be in both Iraq and Afgan. as noted by the decrease in world-wide attacks by Muslim extremeists (much more than AQ) and NO attacks on American soil. The crap you spew is half truths and opinion the media has blessed as facts to get saint Obama elected. Simply put Bush protected us and for his troubles we have to listen to uninformed morons that listen to Katie Couric and feel empowered (oh, like wow) to shoot your ignorant mouth off. don't like it? tough! Just know that some Americans knows we are in a fight for our lives, freedoms and culture from an enemy that is being defeated every day in Kabul, Fallujah and Tikrit. We let up the pressure and stop killing those insurgents then our streets will once again explode and American will die where they sleep. Bush was right and even the financial problems started with Obama using racist pressure to lower loaning standards of Freddie mac and Fannie May while Clinton opened the door to establishing a buyers' housing market for unqualified applicants. Bush did not create this financial mess, your Democrat pals started this crisis pal - don't run from this one.

Once again the liberlas spew hate about the Bush administration. Their vile spleens are now being vented because they HATE a strong man doing what needed to be done. Tracy, we are at peace in this country because we have strong men and women FIGHTING and KILLING bad guys in THEIR backyards and bedrooms, not ours. You would be the first to run and hide and let others like George Bush defend you and make the tough calls instead of being brave and supporting a man making this country safer that before. Remember the attacks on America started with Clinton, but ended on Bush's watch; I guess he went after the right bad guys YOU IDIOT!!!

When will the ProLifers finally get that being Pro Choice is not pro abortion. President Obama has reversed the Bush ban and will once again allow individuals to make their own choice, as is our constitutional right. He also opens the door to help other countries control their population growth so they can properly feed and care for their poor and possibly diminish the horrendous drag on their economies and healthcare systems. How can this be so bad?

Matt said...

pp: So how much economic drag per capita makes abortion okay? $100, 00/child? $10/child? I have always believed that this issue is situationally dependent. Should government spend money on abortion? No. Should we ban it altogether? No. Should we look for the answers in some book written by some guy thousands of years ago, which was subsequently translated by dozens of other guys into at least 6 different languages? No. God gave us a moral compass for a reason. It is what makes us different than the cows you people are afraid to eat. Do what you feel is right in your own life. Neither side has the answers here. Please look within your own heart, and use your own thought process. What sounds right to you? What do you believe and WHY (Note: "why" is the more important part). Politics can be, and was, a beautiful thing. But our bipartisanship is the cause of your nationwide apathy. Why must all beliefs exist in 1 dimensional space. Can you draw a line and say "I belong here"? How about a graph? Space? I anyone else as disenfranchised as I?

Looks to me like the majority of Americans want to be like Europe. Cradle to grave care. The only problem is who is going to protect the world when the Islamists strike? History tells us that Europe calls on USA. Well if we don't make anything anymore, I guess Europe will have to depend on China for Lend Lease. Oh I forgot, the majority of people alive today do not know about Lend Lease. I have lived the best years that America has had, we are fast becoming a third world country. We have the three stooges running the country, Pres, Speaker of House, Majority Leader of Senate. Have you noticed the popularity of the House and Senate? Or try this one on for size all you holy pricks, IMAGINE IF OBAMA WAS ABORTED!!! NO DIRTY ASS NIGGER PRESIDENT! Wouldn't that be GREAT? Truth is, no, cause you would STILL have your panties in a knot because we would STILL have a Democrat in office because Bush would STILL be a fucking retard who still would have STILL brought this country to recession. Now here's one, imagine if Bush was aborted. Bush Sr. Ahhh, that's a sweet sweet dream.

I am consistently amazed that people voted for Obama because of his ability to speak. Not WHAT he spoke but HOW he spoke. They were impressed with his aticulation but never asked the deeper questions of EXACTLY what was he saying. Getting past the elocution, bright people should have noted that he always left people feeling positive, but with no real information. No actionable promises or plans just "feel good" blah, blah, blah. people should take his speeches and remove the rethoric and see what is left - not much. So far he is coming up short of Democrats expectations and right on the money for GOP predictions. This multi-billion dollar incentive program just allows him to fund every Democratic wish list possible and even giving lots of tax money to people that NEVER PAY TAXES! Obama has bankrupted America to fund his constituency. For the next decade hope for no disasters, wars or need to extend our economic reach because Obama, single-handedly has emptied ours, our kids and their kids bank accounts to pay off his constituency.

Alan said...

Jon Stewart at least had the comical nerve to penetrate through the rhetoric to look at the underlying concepts.

Even though I di not vote for Obama, I will pray and hope that he does an excellent job; however, his start does not portend well for our country.

As to some of the other comments made, I will add to them as follows:

1. Abortion vs death penalty- there is no correlation. Our country will continue to be diminished if we continue down the path of indiscriminate, convenient murder of the unborn.
The greatest outrage is that the taxpayers are to pay the freight for these acts. How about the concept of personal responsibility?
2. Afghanistan and Iraq- regardless of whether I think we should have gone into either of these countries, the difference in Irq is significant and will hopefully last for centuries. It is my sincere hope that our troops are brought home in a timely manner- I have a number of friends who are serving around the globe. I do believe we needed to go into both countries.
3. We are in a world conflict with Muslim extremists who want to eradicate our Western culture and civilization. Look at the countries who are Muslim fundamentalists dominated, and see what fate they have in mind for us.
The fact is there are despots who have existed throughout history. When people cave in to rhetoric- such as with Hitler, Pol Pot, etc the inevitable result is bloody conflict. We must fight when faced with such men. Saddam Hussein was such a man.
4. I agree that our country needs real reform- that does not mean bankrupting our future on programs that sound good, but do nothing except worsen our situation.
We already spend more per capita on our students than any society, and yet we rank 28th our of 40 countries who are industrialized.
Our social entitlement and welfare programs are a disgrace- we will not foster independent excellence while we continue to develop and promulgate programs that keep the dependent on the public dole.
Nationalized healthcare is another step in the socialist march. We need real reform of our healthcare system, but we don't need to turn this over to the government. Our government can't effectively manage anything- let's not let them get their hands on this- we have the best healthcare system the world has ever known- why don't we take a bunch of the pork in this so-called stimulus package, and provide healthcare credits for all- not including illegal aliens.
Read the history of Rome to see where out-of-control spending with a diminishing tax base will take us.
5. To the comment made about Truman and FDR, read the definitive facts on their presidencies carefully before you prescribe greatness to them. While they both did some very good things, they also made some grave errors, like most presidents. Both presidents initiated world war involvement. Bush did not start the war against Islamic fundamentalism- this began back in the late 1970s.
6. As to the comments made on the current financial issues- we have had thirteen recessions/depressions since 1900. There are many culprits that get credit for the current mess- Republicans and Democrats, etc. However, this stimulus package is a Trojan horse, and does virtually nothing to immediately impact and improve our economy.
7. The facts are that we are drifting, some would say, listing, heavily toward socialism. Look at the financial circumstances the European countries find themselves in. How about Iceland, where they are on the verge of revolt.

I voted for Bush, but feel he did a very poor job on immigration and controlling government spending; however, we also need to investigate the congress who is mainly responsible for the legislation that is causing a lot of problems, as well as our unwillingness to enforce the laws that are already on the books.

Saddam was put in power by CIA. Responibility for his crimes lies in the White House. Removing him from power has so far cost about 3500 troops, and 1,300,000 Iraqi lives. Which is worse than all terror attacks on US soil combined.
So did Bush protect us? I don't think so... He got us screwed, as did several other presidents.
This is why USA is hated all over the world. Bush just made it much worse.

Anonymous said...

Bush committed no crimes, and people who advocate that are both biased and lack understand as to what real war crimes are (in short, was never at war). They usually are media informed; that is to say woefully ignorant. Anybody who listens to Couric and thinks they are getting news and not a package of opinion and bias probably watches Gilligan's Island reruns on the hope they will get rescued. Bottom line is Bush was right to remove Saddam for he posed a threat to this nation that exceeded any other in the region. We now have a friendly nation to base our troops right in the backyard of the Muslim world takes away one of their best protective weapons; the sheer distance from U.S. retaliation. No longer can a Mideast nation think that it can act without an American response just minutes, not hours or days away. The U.S. is hated because we have so much, and we enjoy our lives, not anything Bush did. His actions to unilaterally protect this country is just an excuse for foreign governments to express their distain that our media dutifully parrots and low IQ people wolf down like candy coated turds. Don't like it? I guess you don't enjoy the freedom from foreign terrorist activities this nation has enjoyed since 9/11. On Bush's watch we had no cars blowing up in the streets, Jihaddists gunning down kids at our malls or planes full of Americans crashing into landmarks. Bush was the right man at the right time and made the tough, although seemingly unpopular calls to keep us safe. The facts since 9/11 prove that without question. Here is a though; if you don't think what Bush did was right, next time there is an attack, YOU run towards the bad guys and pick up a weapon to defend this country instead of just critisizing those who do.

The media has totally forgotten about Obama's admitted Cocaine usage and the yet unresolved issue about whether or not he was foreign born! If you want to state facts that are wrong or just opinion, get ready for a BS flag because although Obama is in office, it doesn't mean he will stay there.

Obama now is directing the private sector CEO's have salary caps if they get public money. Although on the surface a logical idea, in reality it is the nose of a socailist camel working its way into an American tent. Slowly, very slowly and with public and media acceptance, Obama is taking control of more and more areas that the Executive Office has no place. He is in office due to America's infatuation with AMERICAN IDOL and elected him on the same popularity (not ability) premise, and now is passing judgement on wages of THE PRIVATE SECTOR! Tell me somebody is paying attention!! He says he wants and the media supports him, he fails and they apologize for him, he says he screwed up and the media cannonizes while taking a cheap shot at his predesessor. Obama can do no wrong, and if the stimulus package fails it will be the fault of the nasty Republicans - not that he fronted a horrible bill, but if it is enacted and fails then he will simply blame the previous administration and others. HE CAN'T LOSE! Look closely people as Obama's mistakes are quietly bypassed as he takes more and more unilateral actions that affect us all while his minions are too dumb to see that they are supporting someone much, much worse than Bill Clinton for grabbing undeserved power.

Anonymous said...

As a complete indication of Obama's abilities, focus and ambition take a look at what Obama's efforts consist of to pass this importaant legislature. Does he spend time talking with leaders on the hill? No. Does he negotiate with other politicians to shape a better bill? No. Does he offer both sides of the isle a compromise? No. What does Obama do? he heads straight for the media to charm them into putting out his pleas. He makes the rounds of TV interviews and writes an OpEd piece. He should appoint a Hollywood press agent as his "Secretary of buzz" as he seems to be consumed with being an icon and less of a President. He is working the press because he knows that they love him and will suck up anything he says as gospel and blow it all over America as the words from on high. No real questions about what if this doesn't work, what is his recovery plan if the recession persists, and what will America do if a bad natural disaster occurs, or if really bad people attack us again and we are too poor to mount a good national defense? All the media does is sit and giggle in Obama's presence, toss him softballs and then have their pitcure taken with him off-camera. We don't have a President - we have a smooth-talking popularity contest winner of "American Idol - The Presidency".

How come the media has not asked the simple question if Obama was given credit for being so thorough and giving every person that wanted a job a questionarre that was 36 pages long, did that questionarre ask "do you pay your taxes?" a fairly basic question, especially for Daschle. So, if that basic question was NOT asked, then I guess Obama isn't as sharp as the media touts. OR the question was asked and Daschle lied (but Obama supported him anyway). OR The question was asked and Daschle told the truth and Obama selected him ANYWAY hoping the confirmation hearings would miss it. OR Obama knew and thought it was explainable until damage control got away from him. No matter what it shows media as incompetent at best or biased enough to ignore asking the questions that have no "Obama safe" answer. You guys suck!
