I don't get it. Why didn't she know her Dad had returned home? Didn't the family greet him on base upon his return? Don't they write or call or Skype each other? Wouldn't he have mentioned that he was returning home on a particular day? The video is too short to provide any context for understanding this peculiar reunion.

"What?" person:

I think it's pretty clear that this was a deliberate surprise. Daddy was to come on a schoolday - daughter was dropped off in school, mom went off to welcome him - and daddy went to school to reunite with daughter. The teachers were all in the act, of course.

I was so happy for the girl, myself.

To reply to What?

As a military spouse, when Daddy is deployed, you learn there is no hard or fast date when Daddy will be home. His scheduled return can be bumped back by days, weeks or months, it's fairly common for a number of reasons. Many families decide it's better for the children to have a vague idea of when Daddy will be back, rather than have them be devastated when the day arrives and Daddy isn't home.

When my husband returned from the desert, he returned a couple of days early, and we decided not to tell the children in case his flight got delayed.

While he was gone, the children used to talk to the planes of the type he works on as they flew overhead, telling the plane to let Daddy know we love him. As I drove up to the house with the kids that day, we saw one of his planes, and I could barely contain myself as they yelled messages of love. The look on their faces as he came out of the house to greet them was priceless.
