10 Reasons World Youth Day is No Woodstock

Msgr. Miguel Delgado Galindo, who was appointed undersecretary of the Pontifical Council for the Laity on June 18, told L’Osservatore Romano that World Youth Day is not a “Catholic Woodstock,” according to Catholic Culture.

CMR couldn't agree more. In fact, let's look at some pretty major differences between Woodstock and a recent World Youth Day in Australia.

Woodstock - 6,000 patients were seen by doctors or nurses as a result of the concert/orgy.

Youth Day - 191 pilgrims presented themselves at emergency rooms. Notice they presented themselves. They weren't dragged in by mumbling friends who mentioned something about the brown acid before running out screaming about Richard Nixon.

Woodstock: A common diagnosis was overdose.

Youth Day: The most common diagnoses were lower limb strain or sprain, infections, and acute asthma.

Woodstock: Memorable line was "Don't take the brown acid."

Youth Day
: Memorable line was "Bene! Bene! Bene! Oi! Oi! Oi!"

Woodstock: 3 Deaths. One from a heroin overdose, one from a ruptured appendix, and one from some dude passing out in a nearby field and getting run over by a tractor. Ouch.

Youth Day: Zero deaths.

Woodstock: Average number of months it took for leading Woodstock performers Janis Joplin and Jimmi Hendrix to die after Woodstock - 13 months.

Youth Day: Pope Benedict still living. He's 84.

Woodstock - Three tracheotomies performed. Not really sure I understand why that was happening but there's a lot I don't understand about Woodstock.

Youth Day
- Miraculously, no tracheotomies reported. Man, how do you get through three days without emergency tracheotomies?

Woodstock - 80 lawsuits filed after the festival.

Youth Day - O lawsuits but Fr. Richard McBrien may still be considering one having to do with female ordination. Not sure.

Woodstock: 400 Festival-goers who freaked out on bad LSD trips

Youth Day: 0 people reported to be on bad (or for that matter good) LSD trips.

Woodstock: 30,000 sandwiches distributed by the Sisters of the Convent of St. Thomas to save the doped up kids who forgot to eat.

Youth Day: Everyone remembered all by themselves to eat. Amazing, huh?
I think these kinds of numbers say something about the events and their worth. These pics also say a lot as well.

The Woodstock pic looks like the end of some post-apocalyptic war movie where we lost.

The Youth Day pic just looks more alive, more hopeful. So if you're choosing which way to live which one would it be? Youth Day or Woodstock?

So CMR is thinking Msgr. Miguel Delgado Galindo may just be right on this one. World Youth Day is no Woodstock. And that's a good thing.

HT Many of the Woodstock numbers were based on this site and we ran them before in 2008.

Two great lines that made me laugh:

Woodstock had better music. WYD has Christian pop and rock which is always crap.

Woodstock was a site of immorality and disgusting ORGIES. It was a site of venereal diseases, RAPE, fights and violence filled with LSD illegal drugs and trance-full events filled with Hippie music at the time.

World Youth Day? - A BUNCH of young men and women looking for a more fun-filled inspirational time dedicated to Christ and his Holy Mother. A dedicated time to be inspired for friendship and Christian virtue in communion with the Successor of Saint Peter, who is the voice of God on Earth. They spread the message of hope, love and CHARITY indispensable without any selfish reasons.

Don't compare Woodstock to World Youth Day again. It's despicable.

World Youth Day: Lower limb strain or sprain, acute infections, asthma.

Cause: Liturgical Dancing?

NC Register = EWTN = No criticism of WYD

Anon, having been to WYD Cologne and having spoken to those who attended other WYDs, let me make it absolutely clear that I saw NO liturgical dancing -- absolutely none -- at the Pope's Mass. The others I spoke to didn't see any such liturgical dancing at the WYD Masses they attended either. Your remark is out of line.

So Sydney's WYD had liturgical dancers. I'm sorry to see that. But that doesn't mean all WYDs have been like that. Yes, there are things about WYD -- past and present alike -- that should be improved or omitted altogether. And yes, I've heard the horror stories of dropped Hosts and whatnot at previous WYDs. But to blame WYD itself for the bad things that have occurred there (which were the fault of individual bishop's conferences and lay people) is about as stupid as blaming the Catholic Church as a whole for the wrongdoings of some of its members.
