Cdl. Burke Questions Sebelius' Catholicism

I believe HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius who is currently attempting to force Catholic institutions to pay for contraception calls herself a "practicing Catholic." I've even seen the word "devout" used a few times.

But in a recent interview that's on Campus Notes, Cardinal Raymond Leo Burke questioned Sebelius' Catholicism pretty directly.

“To the degree to which (Sebelius) proclaims herself to be a practicing Catholic, she is very wrong,” said Cardinal Burke. He sees it as “simply incomprehensible” for a Catholic to “support the kind of measures that she is supporting.”
Maybe Sebelius is practicing a modern strain of Catholicism known as Pelosism.

Sebelius infamously declared war on pro-lifers at a NARAL event. “We’ve come a long way in women’s health over the last few decades, but we are in a war.” Uhm. Who would that war be against? The Catholic Church, which says all life is sacred?

It's funny (in a sad pull out your hair way) that Sebelius just a few years ago said, "My Catholic faith teaches me that all life is sacred, and personally I believe abortion is wrong."

So she knows what she's doing is wrong but does it anyway. I sincerely wish that all Catholics had the bravery of Cardinal Burke to say the truth.

God bless Cardinal Burke! He always speaks directly without the politically correct flowery language!

Poor Kate. Paving her own way to hell. Shame, really.

Most of the time I am with St. John Chrysostom, who said that the "floor of hell is paved with the skulls of bishops." I am happy that he is an exception.

Job well done, good and faithful servant!

I consider myself a news junkie, and know who most of the CINO's are. I had no idea that Sebelius was one of them. She's so outrageously anti-life. Look at her record of obstruction and obfuscation in Kansas when she was governor. She hid the evidence to let the slaughter houses continue their nefarious work. Really?!? She says she's Catholic?!? About time someone called her out...

In other news, the Most Interesting Man in the World (from the Dos Equis ads) considers himself a devout Muslim.

Seriously, Sebelius, do you even know what devout means?

I sincerely wish that Cardinal Wuerl and Archbishop Dolan had the bravery of Cardinal Burke to say the truth. The bishops' rhetoric about Sebelius' DHHS rings decidedly hollow while Sebelius remains a Catholic in good standing. Morale will improve when the excommunications begin!

Her "home" bishop here in Kansas, Archbishop Naumann, instructed her (privately in 2007, and publicly in 2008) not to present herself for Holy Communion because of her pro-abortion stand.

All Catholics can benefit from a direct clarification of the differences between what the Church proposes and what Catholics-in-name-only would like her to teach.

We're in a communication or propaganda war, and the Church must distinguish herself from pseudo-enterprises that claim authority equal to her own.

I would think it appropriate and instructive to publish a side-by-side comparison of what Sebelius (Pelosi, Biden, et al) preaches and what the Church actually teaches and why, and distribute that chart to all Catholic publications. It's probably been done (e.g., voter guides?), but perhaps it needs to be done on a much more regular basis.

You state, "I sincerely wish that all Catholics had the bravery of Cardinal Burke to say the truth." What I find "simply incomprehensible" is why Cardinal Burke refuses to excommunicate Ms. Sebelius. If these Cardinals were serious they would enforce Canon 915 and excommunicate these so-called "Catholic" politicians. Instead they simply whine and issue statements instead of showing some guts.

Ever notice how often dissidents and "cafeteria Catholics" are described as "devout", while the rest of us are content with the adjective "practicing"?

@ Anonymous 12/1/11 3:45 PM: Cdl. Burke is not Sec. Sebelius' ordinary, nor is he the ordinary of Washington DC. He is the prefect of the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura; it's not within his jurisdiction to excommunicate her. I agree that it's past time she and other public-office dissidents were excommunicated, but let's not blame him for that.
