Abortion Mill Shut Down Indefinitely!

One of the most notorious abortuaries in the United States was just shut down indefinitely by the Illinois Department of Health.

This is the one that constantly hangs anti-Catholic signs in the window and satanic symbols. And the landlord races his cars out to block an ultrasound truck from parking nearby.

The Northern Illinois Women's Center abortion mill in Rockford that is nationally known for the signs of racism and bigotry it has displayed and for the unsanitary conditions inside had its licenses indefinitely suspended by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

According to the suspension notice released by the Illinois Department of Public Health on September 30, 2011, “the department had found conditions at the facility that are a direct threat to the public interest, health, safety and welfare requiring immediate, emergency action.”

Rockford area pro-life activists have known of the horrific conditions inside of this clinic for years. Now even the state of Illinois has recognized the dangerous conditions inside this clinic as a "direct threat to public health, safety, and welfare."
This is amazing and wonderful news. Let's hope they stay closed forever.

PETA Accuses NYTimes of Necrophilia

How awesome is that headline? The kicker is that it's true.

PETA, the animal rights organization that's starting their own porn site, is accusing the New York Times of necrophilia for running this picture.

The Atlantic Wire has the quote:

When I saw it I just couldn't believe that an editor of The New York Times would find it acceptable," PETA's founder and president Ingrid Newkirk told The Atlantic Wire. "It's downright offensive, not just to people who care about animals but almost to everyone. It's a plucked, beheaded, young chicken in a young pose," she said....It's necrophilia. It's not amusing. It's just ghastly and sickly. It's not fitting for The New York Times."
These crazies regularly advance their cause with naked celebrities and are starting their own porn site that will mix human porn and grisly pictures of dead animals. These folks mixing sex and death are accusing others of necrophilia?

Obama: "America Got Soft"

This guy says you've gotten soft.
Can you believe this guy? He enacts ruinous policy after ruinous policy and he blames America for getting "soft."

Jonah Goldberg writes:

Interesting perspective. I wonder where America could have lost its competitive edge. It couldn’t possibly have anything to do with a government that blows billions on green energy boondoggles while making it harder to drill for oil while trying to make electricity rates “skyrocket.” It couldn’t have to do with extending unemployment benefits to 99 weeks (and rising), or to bailouts or...

Seriously, in 2008 we elected a community organizer, state senator, college instructor first term senator over a guy who spent five years in a Vietnamese prison. And now he’s lecturing us about how America’s gone “soft”? Really?
I can't help but think of Jimmy Carter's Malaise speech which has gone down as one of the more "tone deaf" speeches by an American President. Methinks this comment may be seen again during the 2012 campaign.

Teacher Disciplines Students Who Say "Bless You"

A teacher is penalizing students who say "Bless you" after someone sneezes and the school district is now determining whether saying "Bless you" is a classroom disruption.

MSNBC reports:

Teacher Steve Cuckovich docked his students' scores after they said "bless you" in the middle of class. He says talking of any kind is disruptive and takes time away from class.

Cuckovich teaches health at William C. Wood High School in Vacaville.

"The blessing doesn't make any sense anymore," Cuckovich told the Fox affiliate in Sacramento. "When you sneezed in the old days, they thought you were dispelling evil spirits out of your body. So they were saying, 'God bless you,' for getting rid of evil spirits. But today, what you're doing doesn't really make any sense."
I'm sure this has nothing to do with the teacher not wanting to hear anything religious in a public school. Reportedly, the teacher is taking 25 points off test grades for saying "bless you."

The district weighed in yesterday saying that the "students were sneezing in dramatic fashion with the intent of disrupting class." So it seems to me that this teacher has very little control of his classroom. But the school district rather than dumping this imbecile is reviewing the use of "bless you" by students. The district said:
"It was brought to the District’s attention a few days ago that students were disciplined for being disruptive in class. The teacher believed that students were dramatically sneezing and responding in repetitive fashion “Bless You”. One of the concerns is the social convention of saying “Gesundheit”, “God Bless You”, or “Bless You” after someone sneezes. Of question is whether a series of these repeated remarks by several students constitutes freedom of speech or a classroom disruption and merits student discipline. Vacaville Unified’s Administration is continuing its investigation of this reported classroom disruption. We are reviewing the impact of this disruption and the student grading policy. Certainly a blessing by one individual to another after a sneeze is a welcomed acknowledgement of a social norm. Hopefully it is not abused as a disruption of classroom instructional activities."
Lunacy.

What could be happening here is that the kids know this guy hates to hear about God so they pretend to sneeze and say "God bless you" or just "bless you." I don't know but it sounds like the kind of thing I would've done as a stupid kid.

But it's clear that this teacher has completely lost control of his students and what's the possible solution? No more "God bless you." Consider this reason # 374,598 to not send your children to public school.

NY To Cut Costs By Covering Transgender Surgery?

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo appointed a task force to "overhaul the Medicaid system" because it's going broke. So what recommendations did the cost-cutting brain trust come up with? In a report they've recommended forcing taxpayers to pay for transgender surgery and therapy for those who wish to have their groins mutilated.

What's even more astounding than that is that the panel is trumpeting this is as a cost cutting measure. Wait for the logic because, I'll tell you, it's a little difficult to undersand. The panel seems to be saying that unless we all pay for the "surgery," transgenders may become depressed, get addicted to drugs, and/or kill themselves - all of which are expensive to the state. I'm not kidding. That's what they're saying.

The AP reports:

Advocates say there's limited data on the state's transgender population, but the change could affect thousands of New Yorkers and help cut Medicaid costs for their mental health and drug abuse treatment. California and Minnesota already provide Medicaid coverage for transgender surgery and hormone replacement therapy, which the American Medical Association supports.

"The reason the AMA said this is medically necessary is if the transgender can't get services they need to live in the gender they are it leads to depression, suicide attempts, substance abuse," said Ross Levi, executive director of the Empire State Pride Agenda, which advocates for gay and transgender rights. The cost would be a tiny part of the Medicaid budget, a fraction of a percent, and overall could provide a net cost savings, he said.

The proposal says: "Provide Medicaid coverage for transgender surgery/hormone replacement therapy and treatment."
Cuomo will be considering this in coming weeks. And just in case you're thinking this doesn't affect you, please remember that federal funds pay half of New York's Medicaid program.

So the lesson here for Tea Partiers is if they don't get their way this election cycle we must threaten that unless the deficit is cut and government bureaucracies diminished they'll get addicted to drugs, get depressed, and start killing themselves. Then government will then be forced to listen, I guess because cleaning up all those messy bodies of Tea Partiers would be too much of a burden on the taxpayer. I'm sure that'll happen. Right?

You Watching Jim Caviezel's New Show?

Jim Caviezel's new show from producers JJ Abrams and Jonathan Nolan got off to a good start. One awesome thing I meant to share earlier was that I was watching EWTN's "The World Over" last Thursday and at the end of the show host Raymond Arroyo told his audience at EWTN to go watch Caviezel's new show on CBS. That's pretty awesome. I mean, what other network on television would tell people to go watch another network?

But I watched it and it was a good show with a lot of cool possibilities. Caviezel plays a former spy who is approached by a mysterious billionaire played by Michael Emerson of LOST fame (guy still creeps me out) to go all vigilante on crime and protect people.

Blogging buddy Jen Raiche asked me recently what value as a Catholic does the show bring. I'm not sure how Catholicy the show is but hey, it's about defending the innocent or at least the innocent-er. And I trust Caviezel to deliver an inspiring performance rather than anything degrading.

Hey, I noticed that Caviezel's character tends to knock people out with the handle of his gun rather than shooting them and when he does shoot them he tends to shoot a lot of people in the leg. So right there I think that's a good Catholic motto. If you need to incapacitate bad guys try smashing the handle of your gun somewhere on the back of their head or neck region (I can't tell which) but if your sneaking up skills are poor and you're forced to shoot someone, shoot them in the leg. I don't think these rules will ever be codified into a commandment or anything but it's a good rule of thumb. Head smash first, shoot later. Of course, the shooting in the leg rule is bendable if you're not a very good shot or you don't have a lot of bullets. But at least in the show Caviezel's got mad gun skills so it works for him.

I don't think the Catechism says anything about silencers so you're on your own there.

Anyway, the show looks pretty cool and it started off with decent but not great ratings so I want to support Caviezel. I'll be watching.

Did you watch it? What do you think?

PETA's Most Despicable Ad...in Weeks

The PETA people are crazy. And not even nice crazy but nasty crazy. That's been well documented. Their recent despicable ad shows a graphic image of a shark attack and essentially calls it "payback."

What a bunch of jerks. To these animal worshiping nutjobs, a shark attack is the same as ordering a Filet o'Fish at McDonalds. Weasel Zippers has the full story.

Black People Must Hate Black People

Black people must hate black people. How else to interpret this little factoid?

“According to a Washington Post/ABC News survey, his favorability rating among African-Americans has dropped off a cliff, plunging from 83 percent five months ago to a mere 58 percent today — a drop of 25 points, a bit more than a point per week!”
Can't we all just get along?

But black people are not alone. It seems racism is the new national pastime.

• Before Obama’s speech to Congress and the nation — watched by 34 million families — his job approval averaged 44 percent. Now it averages 43 percent, according to realclearpolitics.com. He deployed his ultimate weapon — a nationally televised speech to Congress — and came up empty.

• The president’s personal favorability has taken a big hit even as his job approval has shown no gain. The Post/ABC poll has his rating down to 47 percent, the first time in his presidency it has dropped below 50. Clearly, the spectacle of a class warrior leading the country is grating on most Americans. Usually, despite drops in his job approval, his personal ratings have stayed high. Not anymore. The most recent New York Times/CBS poll had his favorability actually lagging behind his job approval by 4 points — the first time it has ever done so in their polling.

• Young people, the core of Obama’s base, now hold equally favorable and unfavorable views of the president they once adored. And his favorability among self-described “liberal” Democrats has also dropped. The percentage of those who say they are strongly favorable has fallen from 69 percent in April to 52 percent now. For a president whose reelection chances hinge on his ability to turn out his base, these numbers are depressing indeed.

Dr. Martin Luther King said "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

Dream fulfilled.

Dude. How Does a "Sex Conference" Bomb?

OK. How did Fordham University's conference on sexual diversity fail. It had all the makings of a hit. Seriously, how does a sex conference fail? Just say the word "sex" and people pay attention.

And throw in the bonus of saying bad things about the Catholic Church at no extra cost.

So let's get this straight. The folks at Fordham set up a conference completely dedicated to two of liberals' favorite things- namely sex and church bashing. And it failed.

Bill Donohue of The Catholic League hilariously wrote:

Just a hundred or so curious souls bothered to show up, and though the event was mostly a bomb, it did have its moments. They heard from someone who confessed how he mutilated his genitals, and others so depressed they made the mutilator sound normal. Indeed, some of the tales would have made Rod Serling's head spin.

Father John Dufell, ever the helpful priest, was there to give advice: when asked by a homosexual how he is supposed to deal with his inadmissibility to become a priest, Dufell told him to lie. He said it was okay to lie because it is the "system" in the Catholic Church that is broken.

One poor soul who attended sounded absolutely virginal: "I expected it to be a discussion of church teaching, but instead it kind of assumed that church teaching was wrong—and I wasn't expecting that." Didn't he know where he was?

In any event, it was nice to learn that Erma Durkin, who traveled all the way from Maryland, found the sessions "very encouraging." Erma is 82.
Yup. Fordham University somehow found a way to make SEX boooooring. So boring that hardly anyone showed up. Now that takes some doing.

I guess people don't want to listen to old hippies talking dirty. Who knew?

The Myth of the Personally Pro-Life Catholic

I was wondering something tonight in light of the news that Congress will be investigating Planned Parenthood. Are there really Catholics who are personally pro-life and publicly pro-choice? Is that an honest opinion? The answer, if you can call it that, came to me in the form of a question. Have I ever seen or heard of personally pro-life Catholics praying in front of abortion clinics?

Congress to Investigate Planned Parenthood

This is the best news I've had all day.

LifeNews.com reports:

A Congressional committee has taken the first steps in investigating the Planned Parenthood abortion business over abuses ranging from financial disparities to its compliance with federal regulations on taxpayer funding to concerns that it is covering up cases of sex trafficking.
In the letter announcing the investigation Rep. Cliff Stearns wrote that the Committee specifically has “questions about the policies in place and actions undertaken by PPFA [Planned Parenthood Federation of America] and its affiliates relating to its use of federal funding and its compliance with federal restrictions on the funding of abortion.”

Oh yeah.

Liberals are, of course, freaking out. I guess it was OK when Obama was forcing states to fund Planned Parenthood but it's not OK to ensure that taxpayer money is not being misappropriated or used illegally.

And let's face it, the government's been turning a blind eye to Planned Parenthood for so long that I'm willing to bet the farm that a lot of "issues" will arise.

We should all give a great big thanks to Lila Rose, the Live Action folks, and the Susan B. Anthony List for they did much of the heavy lifting on this as far as exposing Planned Parenthood.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, President of the Susan B. Anthony List, said:
“This is a critical step in holding accountable an organization that has been exposed as a billion dollar business centered on abortion and an unapologetic partner of those who wish to exploit young girls. We strongly believe that as Congress and the American people learn more about Planned Parenthood, they will see the urgency in defunding them immediately of the hundreds of millions of tax dollars they receive every year.”
This puts me in a very good mood.

Update: The media already seems to be on the attack. While not reporting on the investigation, The Hill's first piece on the subject is "Dems hammer GOP's Planned Parenthood funding probe." I couldn't find a report on the investigation itself, just the Dem response.

Get ready for a lot more of this. Hopefully Republicans will weather the media storm coming their way over this.

Evicted and Killed for Carbon Credits

We often hear about how the Pope has caused millions to die of AIDS because of the Church's stance on condoms. Never mind that the United Nations keeps lying to people by telling them that condoms will protect them or that the Pope doesn't force anything on anyone.

But one never hears about the body count associated with radical environmentalism which doesn't leave people with free will. One of the first major victories for environmentalists was to ban DDT and the result has been the unnecessary deaths of millions who could have been protected against malaria. According to U.N. estimates, malaria kills one child every 30 seconds worldwide.

But it's for a good cause, you know.

Environmentalism in its current radical form is anti-human. Violently so, at times. I bring that up as a way of introduction to a recent OXFAM report shows that more than 20,000 people say they were evicted from their homes and some murdered in recent years to make way for a tree plantation run by a British forestry company for carbon credits under the Kyoto Protocol.

The New York Times reports:

“I heard people being beaten, so I ran outside,” said Emmanuel Cyicyima, 33. “The houses were being burnt down.”

Other villagers described gun-toting soldiers and an 8-year-old child burning to death when his home was set ablaze by security officers.

“They said if we hesitated they would shoot us,” said William Bakeshisha, adding that he hid in his coffee plantation, watching his house burn down. “Smoke and fire.”

...the government and the company said the settlers were illegal and evicted for a good cause: to protect the environment and help fight global warming.

The case twists around an emerging multibillion-dollar market trading carbon-credits under the Kyoto Protocol, which contains mechanisms for outsourcing environmental protection to developing nations.
Hey, what's a few dead kids and thousands of homeless people in the name of a good cause?
Olivia Mukamperezida, 28, said her house was among the first in her community to be burned down. One day in late 2009, she said, her eldest son, Friday, was sick at home, so she went out to find medicine. Villagers suddenly told her to rush back. Everything was incinerated.

“I found my house when it was completely finished,” she said. “I just cried.”

Ms. Mukamperezida never found the culprits. She buried Friday’s bones in a grave, but says she does not know if it is still there.

“They are planting trees,” she said.
Kudos to the New York Times for exposing this horror.

Docs: Don't Give Terminal Patients Drugs

A group of British doctors announced that terminal cancer patients should not be given "life extending" drugs. I'm sure you know why without me even having to say it but it's, of course, about the Benjamins. They say The NHS spends well over £5 billion annually on cancer treatments and that's just too much for people who are going to die anyway. Never mind, I guess, all those people who receive a prognosis that they'll be dead in a month and then go on living for many more years.

My brother was terminal and went on to live many more years where he got to love his family and raise his children. These jerks would've robbed him of that so they could save the state some money.

The Daily Mail reports:

Patients with terminal cancer should not be given life-extending drugs, doctors said yesterday.

The treatments give false hope and are too costly for the public purse, they warned.

The group of 37 cancer experts, including British specialist Karol Sikora, claimed a 'culture of excess' had led doctors to 'overtreat, overdiagnose and overpromise'.
Let's be clear. This has nothing to do with giving "false hope" and has everything to do with "the public purse."

You know, the left is always saying that religious people reject science. But shouldn't accepting the limitations of science (and scientists) be part of that equation? Isn't it true that doctors don't always know what's going to happen to a patient? Years ago, we were told my father wouldn't last the night. Yeah, he had five more years too. And they were some of his healthiest years too.

And one final question - aren't we all terminal? I mean, eventually?

Here's the thing, when questions of life or death come down to money like this one clearly does, eventually the talk will go from talking about terminal patients to "useful" patients or those who might or might not have "productive" years left to pay more taxes.

If someone is deemed "useful" then they might get some drugs, if not...hey, that's what assisted suicide is for.

THe Horrors of the One Child Policy

The horrors of the one child policy were made plain yesterday when Reggie Littlejohn, President of the Women’s Rights Without Frontiers, testified on Capitol Hill on the one-child policy that Vice President Joe Biden loves so much.

Her testimony comes on the heels of a groundbreaking new report containing thirteen new, documented cases of coerced and forced abortions (including one woman at eight months and another carrying twins at 8 ½ months), forced sterilization, forced contraception, the demolition of homes, and even torture.

The report is daring in that it names names and contains horrific accounts of
a couple brutally tortured for missing a pregnancy check by one day; a man whose head
was smashed open and who is now permanently disabled because his wife had a second
child; a father who was beaten to death because his son was suspected of having a second child.

"We have chosen to release the names of the perpetrators of these Crimes Against
Humanity, so that they can be held accountable before the world. This report contains
dozens of their names, as well as details of their crimes," said Littlejohn.

Littlejohn testified,

Last year, crematorium workers in Guangdong Province found an infant crying in a “medical waste” receptacle on its way to being cremated, reported Xinhua, China’s official news agency. The crematorium workers immediately sent the infant back to the hospital. Later that day, the hospital sent the infant back to the crematorium, dead. The hospital offered no explanation of the cause of death.iii

Perry Smacks Up Romney

This video does what Rick Perry didn't seem to be able to do at the debate.

Hippies Crack Me Up

A childhood education consultant has advised schools to do possibly the stupidest thing I've ever heard in Nursery World Magazine.

Children should be provided with paper other than white to drawn on and paints and crayons should come in "the full range of flesh tones", reflecting the diversity of the human race, according to the former teacher.
Seriously? Paper other than white? Oh and witches shouldn't be dressed in black you know because then your kids will grow up to hate black people. That follows logically, doesn't it?

She also said that
"staff should be prepared to be economical with the truth when asked by pupils what their favourite colour is and, in the interests of good race relations, answer "black" or "brown".
"Economical with the truth?"

Look, in nursery school if the kids don't eat the blocks, it's a good day. Stop monkeying with kids. It's not the kids who are obsessed with race. It's the overgrown hippies. I say we take away the crayons from the hippies and put them in a timeout.

UK: Police Ban Bible from Christian Cafe

Police in the UK have told the owner of a Christian café to stop displaying Bible texts on a video screen, because it breaches public order laws, according to Christian.org.

Wow. Western civilization no longer has to point to the metaphorical slippery slope. We've slipped down the slope so far that now we're just reporting on what the thud sounds like.

I, once again, quote Russian poet Tanya Khodkevich who was sentenced to ten years by the Soviets for writing this:

You can pray freely
But just so God alone can hear.

What happens if this cafe owner persists in displaying Bible quotes? Fined until he's run out of business? Jail?

Western civilization is headed straight to hell folks. We're just arguing about how many seats are in the hand basket now.

Runner Carries Injured Opponent 1/2 Mile

I'm heading to Mass this morning but I saw this and thought it was pretty cool so I thought I'd throw it up here. Yahoo reports:

Josh Ripley didn't have to stop. Running in a recent cross country meet for Andover (Minn.) High, the junior varsity runner was making his way through the trail at the Applejack Invite when he heard a loud scream during the first mile of a two-mile race. Most of the other kids running didn't pay much attention to Lakeville South runner Mark Paulauskas, who was writhing in pain at the time, as they passed by.

The only person who decided to pay attention was Ripley. As an Anoka-Hennepin school district release reported, Ripley immediately noticed Paulauskas holding his bloody ankle. Then, instead of running back and calling for help, he did the only thing he could think of: He carried the injured runner a half mile back to coaches and family members.

The Ballad of Macho Tacos and the Death of the American Dream

What starts out as a great story about a young college student trying to live the American Dream just became a cautionary tale for our time.

You ready? A student at West Hills College Lemoore wanted to put a little extra scratch together so he decided to make and sell tacos on campus. Hey, good for him. Kid's an entrepreneur, a go-getter. Good for him.

So he started making tacos and put out an ad campaign all over campus. He even came up with an ad campaign that was approved by the administration. His little slogan read, "You have to be macho to eat my taco."

It turns out that some people who love to be offended announced they were offended by the slogan. They claimed to be offended because as one student said, "Eat my taco, kind of just sounds wrong."

So enough people who like to complain complained and political correctness ruled the day and the school told our entrepreneur he could no longer use the logo.

KMPH reports:

Dean of Students Jose Lopez -- who initially approved the flyer -- later revoked it. "I read it all and to me it was fine but when I asked students what part of it here is offensive...I guess it just really came down to one word here."

He said the phrase, "eat my taco," is sexual.
The Dean suggested he change it to "eat a taco."

So, because some weenies have their heads so firmly wedded to the gutter, our entrepreneur can't sell his macho tacos. Now, to give some credit to the Dean, he said he would reimburse the entrepreneur for the costs.

But this is where the story takes a turn that makes it so awesomely worse and indicative of our time. When asked how he felt about this, our entrepreneur didn't just take it on the chin. No, chins aren't made for that anymore. Our hero seems to be paving the way for a lawsuit.

He was quoted in the news saying:
"I've been irreparably harmed by this because now that the administration pointed out what they deem this to mean, I'll never be able to prepare or enjoy a taco again, because I'll always have that perverse image in my mind.
Ha! How awesome is that? Irreparably harmed!?

Your Honor, my client will never be able to eat a taco again! Oh the tragedy that can only be solved by some mad cash. If this perverse image subjected into his mind also extends to burritos, hot dogs and other food groups this lawsuit could be worth a fortune.

You could say it's political correctness run amok meets rampant litigiousness. But on the other hand, it's kind of a happy ending. The campus gets to pat itself on the back for being sensitive and the kid ends up with some green in his pocket which was the initial goal. Unfortunately, it also spells doom for our country.

What a bunch of weenies! Oh wait, is that offensive?

Romney Stinks on End of Life Issues Too?

First we had the Michelle Bachmann fade and now we may be seeing Rick Perry fade. The one constant has been Mitt Romney. And that's scaring me. A lot.

I'm really starting to wonder if Mitt is actually going to win this thing.

And here's something a bit disconcerting. We all know about Mitt Romney's conversion on abortion. I hope it's a real conversion and not a strategy.

But the Politico reports today Romney's take on end of life issues are also pretty scary.

But Romney does have a history on the issue, and a controversial one at that. In 2005, aides to then-Massachusetts Gov. Romney pressed vigorously in court for a pull-the-plug order on a severely-beaten 11-year-old girl who appeared to be brain dead, only to rescind the request when the child unexpectedly emerged from a vegetative coma.

In late 2005, with the GOP fight over Terri Schiavo still fresh in the mind of party conservatives, Romney's social service department, presented with a damned-if-you-do-damned-if-you-don't scenario, petitioned the state's Supreme Court to remove life support for young Haleigh Poutre, who was sadistically, horrifically abused by her adoptive mother and stepfather for months.

When doctors examined the girl's brain stem, they were shocked to find it had sheared - an injury most often associated with high-speed car crashes.

In Sept. 2008, officials with Romney's Department of Social Services - admitting they ignored numerous signs the girl was being battered over a period of months — obtained custody of Haleigh, determined that the had "no possibility of regaining a meaningful existence" due to the extent of her brain damage, and began to consider judicial end-of-life options including removal of life support and feeding.

Haleigh's jailed stepfather, possibly trying to dodge murder charges if he was able to keep the child alive, objected; The girl's birth mother and another close relative supported the state's request to obtain a "do not resuscitate" order.

On Jan. 16, 2008, the state's highest court sided with Romney's DSS and gave permission for the removal of a respirator and feeding tube.

But a day after the decision, Haleigh regained consciousness and began responding to simple commands, to the astonishment of doctors at Baystate hospital in Springfield.

A few days later, Romney, who had remained mum on the case up until that point, was pressed by reporters to articulate a broader position on end-of-life, but demurred, telling them:

"My concern is with this young girl and her current status," he told the Boston Globe. "In light of reported improvements in her medical condition, it should be clear to everyone that no action should be taken to end this girl's life."
Look, you can't blame Romney for what happened to the little girl in the first place. It's not his fault she was beaten within an inch of her life. But to pull the feeding tube from a little girl? Seriously? And he may be the standard bearer for the GOP? I know Terry Schiavo's brother was pretty ticked at Romney for this and rightly so.

I'll admit that last time I was probably taken in by Romney a bit but much of that was because McCain scared me to no end. But I've done my research now on Romney and I'm just not seeing what GOP voters are seeing in the guy. He's questionable on abortion, terrible on end of life issues, and he's an economic Big Government type. He can argue all he wants about states rights as opposed to federal rights but the crux of the matter for me is that the guy sees government as the solution, not the problem.

So why are so many OK with this guy winning? I'm really asking. What is it that people see in Romney that I'm missing.

Nancy: Cutting Abortion Funding a "Horror"

Nancy Pelosi was asked by CNS what she would do if Republicans who voted against the continuing resolution this morning were angling again to remove funding from Planned Parenthood.

And our favorite Catholic congresswoman Nancy Pelosi said:

“Let’s hope that they’re not playing games with us–and now we are getting into games,” Pelosi said, when asked by CNSNews.com how committed she would be to stopping a provision to defund of Planned Parenthood.

“Why don’t we come back and have another press conference after they say what they are going to do,” said Pelosi. “Because I think it’s a waste of your time and my time to speculate on the horrors that they could come up with–because we know they are endless and we could be here a long time.
Sooo...defunding Planned Parenthood would be a "horror?"

What kind of sick twisted mind thinks that way?

You know what the real horror is? Babies are being torn apart every day by the thousands and the party of death is willing to shut down the entire government in order to keep footing the bill for their Big Abortion buddies. That's a horror.

You wanna' know the other horror? The "pro-life" Republican Party doesn't have the stones to force them to do it. They might talk about it. They might even threaten it. But they've proven time and again that they're simply not as committed to life as the Democrats are to death. Now, that's a horror.

Abp. Dolan Warns Obama

Thems fighting words. And I'm likin' it. Archbishop Timothy Dolan sent a pretty strongly worded letter to President Obama saying that unless this administration changes course quickly on the issue of religious freedom that the government is creating "a national conflict between Church and State of enormous proportions."

Wow. Let me get my pom poms out and start a cheer. My splits aren't as impressive as they used to be but I still got mad ups, yo.

Let's face it, religious freedom in America has been taking a sound beating yesterday. So seeing this kind of resistance is very welcome.

Things have gotten so bad here that I fear this quote is getting a little too apropos for America today. A Russian poet Tanya Khodkevich was sentenced to ten years by the Soviets for writing this:

You can pray freely
But just so God alone can hear.
How apropos is that for America today?

That's why we increasingly hear about the "Freedom to worship" from this administration rather than the "freedom of religion." Freedom to worship, you see, has no real world applicability.

According to modern secularists who seem to be running things nowadays, religion is something it's ok for the oogedy boogedy bitter clingers to practice for an hour a week in their church or synagogue but don't take that nonsense out into the real world because it and you will be smacked on the nose.

Archbishop Dolan seems to understand this because he sent a letter to President Obama on the issue of religious freedom, especially when it comes to recognizing marriage. Here's the power quote:
The Administration‟s failure to change course on this matter will, as the attached analysis indicates, precipitate a national conflict between Church and State of enormous proportions and to the detriment of both institutions.
That's some pretty strong language and it's good to hear. Let's hope that this is only a first step because let's face it, there's no way Obama's changing course. Zero. So it's man up time for the bishops. And me and my pom poms have got their back.

Anyone got a good word that rhymes with Dolan?

A Test To Be Catholic?

A test to be Catholic?

Mao Qin Wang fled to Canada from his native China for fear of religious persecution for his Roman Catholic faith.

Canada's Immigration and Refugee Board said "Oh yeah? Well who was Jesus' grandmother? Huh?"

The 26-year-old insists he is a devout Roman Catholic, but in January he failed a test that required proof through precise knowledge, such as the name of Jesus' grandmother.

The National Post reported that, among other botched responses, the man knew Mary was the mother of Jesus but did not know Anne was his grandmother's name. He also fell short when explaining some nuances of the faith.

"The claimant was asked whether the consecrated wafer or the bread represents the body of Jesus or whether it is the body of Jesus," stated the IRB decision by adjudicator Rose Andrachuck, quoted by the National Post.

"The claimant responded that it represented the body of Jesus, which is incorrect."
Now I understand fully that Canada must have some way of identifying people who falsely claim persecution for immigration purposes, but this ain't it. If they asked these same questions to a majority of Canadian Catholics, or Americans for that matter, hosts of them would be deported on the spot.

Now before you get all crazy thinking this might be a good idea to weed out nominal or cafeteria Catholics, remember that... ummm... that...

Gimme a minute. I am sure its a bad idea, I just can't think of why for the moment.

Just kidding.

If Mao Qin Wang isn't faking, all this test shows is that Catholic education in China is just as bad as it is here. If he is faking his Catholicism, welcome to the club buddy. You'll fit right in.

Rangel's Portrait Unveiled on Capitol Hill

The Politico reports that despite being recently censured, congressman Charlie Rangel will have his visage permanently displayed on Capitol Hill. Good grief.

The House Ways and Means Committee, which Rangel chaired until he lost his gavel following accusations of ethics violations, is hosting a ceremony and reception Thursday to unveil Rangel’s official portrait in Longworth House Office Building.
I'm really hoping they use this for his portrait.

Obama Hopelessly Devoted to Big Abortion

The Susan B. Anthony List made this video that really sums up perfectly the relationship between Planned Parenthood and President Obama.

Check out the facts at SBA-List. It's pretty damning to see it all at once.

We Can Not Stay Silent

I know a guy who for many years was pro-choice. Well, he wasn't really PRO-anything. Abortion kinda' just got a shrug out of him and he bought into the whole, "Well, I'm a man so it's not for me to make a decision" line of argument.

I knew him for many years and the topic wouldn't come up all that often. But one time his wife, who is pro-choice, called me out in front of a whole group of people at a bar. She asked me how I could be anti-abortion. She called me out for being anti-woman.

She was a nurse and when I started to lay out my points she interrupted me and announced to the dozen or so people who were with us that it was "a match up between science and religion." They joked that it was all the things you're not supposed to talk about in public.

So I asked her if she believed that abortion was OK five minutes before birth. She said she didn't. She said "that's crazy." I then walked her back through the days, weeks and months where she would consider abortion immoral until ultimately she realized that there was no way to stop me from walking her back to the moment of conception so she picked a random moment somewhere in the fourth month where it would be OK to abort because the baby had suddenly ceased to be human.

And, being kinda' ticked off, I then asked her to defend this "magical moment" when all of a sudden-like this blob of tissue transmogrifies into a human. And truth be told I kinda' mocked her and this "magical moment" (yeah, I used air quotes) that takes place somewhere in the fourth month. I then turned it around again and said that we agree that many abortions should be illegal. I, however, agree with science that the moment of conception creates a human being with their own DNA. She, however, believes in this "magical moment" when a blob becomes human.

She then said that she didn't believe abortion was that bad because she believed that aborted babies got reincarnated. What?!

I was a bit of a jerk about it and needless to say, she hated me. And I'm pretty sure she still hates me. But an interesting thing happened. Her husband is now pro-life. Hardcore pro-life. And he says it was the argument I had with his wife that turned his head around. Not all at once but he said that's what started him thinking.

But the reason I'm bringing this up is not to show what a jerk I am, it's to highlight something my buddy said to me just two days ago. He blamed pro-lifers for not doing a better job getting the word out. He said that the facts are so clearly on our side and that it's our fault that the entire country isn't pro-life. I pointed out to him that his wife was still pro-choice despite many discussions they've had on the issue. I said that you can speak to everyone but nobody has to listen.

But it got me thinking. I'll bet that years into the future when abortion is looked upon in the same way we look upon slavery now, many people will blame pro-lifers for not doing a better job convincing people.

And then I thought of our own culpability for sometimes staying silent. Pro-lifers should proudly speak to anyone and everyone about life issues. We should have bumper stickers ( I had one but it got keyed off over a year ago and I haven't replaced it yet.) I know I can do more praying. I know I can do more. You never know if speaking out can change a heart which maybe can save a baby. Which maybe can save a soul. I shudder to think of the responsibility we have for staying silent.

Study: School Choice A Success!

A study financed by the Department of Education shows that school choice significantly improves the lives of children and increases their educational prospects for the future, especially minority children.

One startling point is that school choice eliminated “nearly 75 percent of the black-white gap in high school graduation and 25 percent of the gap in bachelor’s degree completion,” according to The Daily Caller.

But don't expect a miracle like that to change the policies of the Obama administration, the Department of Education or the union thugs who rail against giving families the ability to choose where they send their children to school.

Here's the details:

On Monday the National Bureau of Economic Research released a working paper written by Harvard, Dartmouth and Brown University researchers, providing “the first evidence of the impact of school choice on the college achievement gap.”

The researchers, two economists and two education policy experts, looked at Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools in North Carolina and the effect of their school choice program “on college matriculation and degree completion.”

“CMS implemented an open enrollment public school choice program in the Fall of 2002,” says the paper. “Students were guaranteed admission to their neighborhood school but were allowed to choose and rank up to three other schools in the district, including magnet schools. When demand for school slots exceeded supply, allocation was determined by lottery.”

Of the eight public schools in that district, the researchers ranked four as “low quality” and four as “high quality.” Students who lived in a neighborhood where the nearest school was low quality, but who won a lottery to attend a high quality school, were “more likely than lottery losers to graduate from high school, attend a four-year college, and earn a bachelor’s degree.

“They are twice as likely to earn a degree from an elite university. The results suggest that school choice can improve students’ longer-term life chances when they gain access to schools that are better on observed dimensions of quality.”
From my understanding, private schools weren't included in this "choice" program but even on a limited basis, the program produced wonderful results.

Imagine what would occur if competition were allowed back into education. The lives of children would become better, more hopeful. But the stranglehold that unions have over the education system would weaken so they'll fight it every step of the way.

Why Are Liberal Protesters Always Naked?

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), announced plans to launch a pornography website. You know, 'cause porn has everything to do with animal rights. The non-profit said it hopes to raise awareness of veganism through a mix of pornography and graphic footage of animal suffering.

Naked chicks and dead animals? What's the big deal? You can get that on the Discovery Channel. First you watch animals ripping apart smaller animals and then invariably the commercials feature half naked women selling me something that you can't remember once the animals start tearing each other apart again.

PETA is famous for getting actresses and models to get naked to protest other actresses and models wearing fur. Aren't actresses and models getting naked all the time anyway so what's the big deal?

And it's not just PETA. Seriously, the to-do list for liberal protesters must start with 1) Get naked! 2)???

There's been naked yoga protests against the war. There's been naked protests to protest rules against nakedness. There's been naked protests against global warming.

Remember this one from a few weeks ago? The Blaze reported that a "group of 50 artists and supporters angry with Wall Street descended lower Manhattan this morning dressed as bankers only to quickly strip down and then disappear within minutes."

This did nothing for the cause other than to make everyone wary of artists and supporters.

What is it with lib protesters getting naked? What's that about?

I believe it has everything to do with libs knowing their ideas are unmarketable to the majority of people so they know they must do something else. They know that instead of appealing to logic they must go the other way and appeal to the basest instincts possible.

And let's face it, they know the juvenile media will all but show up waving single dollar bills. (I once heard a radio report live from a naked protest and I couldn't help but wonder how the reporter sold his editor on going to that protest? It was radio for goodness sake!)

If Tea Partiers send a media advisory in hopes of getting coverage they know that even if they promise 3,000 protesters the media isn't likely to show up. But the libs know that you don't need 3,000 protesters you just need two or three naked models. And then the press will gather like vultures over road kill.

It's a sad commentary on our culture but in these days when its argued that sex is meaningless it's ironically become the central focus of our culture.

Hey, That's My Daughter!

I'm the worst Dad...evah!

I read the site "Weasel Zippers" many times a day. Well, often when they run a story on abortion they run this graphic along with it.

I've honestly seen this pic 50 times or more. But last night I was looking at it and thinking that little girl doesn't match at all. Not even a little. And then it hit me - THAT'S MY KID!!! Yup. That little girl in two shades of pink and the boots is my three year old daughter. And the girl standing behind her is my eleven year old. You can see my brown shoe too but I totally matched.

So, as you can see, I'm a terrible Dad who takes his daughter out in unmatching clothes and then doesn't recognize his own daughter when he looks at her 50 times. But on the plus side, they wear unmatching clothes at pro-life rallies so I've gotta' get a little credit, right?

Alberto Cutie Is A Jerk

Do you remember Fr. Alberto Cutie, the prominent Florida priest who got caught smooching his girlie in public and then just as prominently abandoned the Catholic Church?

As if that wasn't jerky enough, this certainly is.

As some sort of self justification for his leaving the Church, he writes a despicable article for the Huffington Post in which he claims to detail the reasons (read Big Bad Catholic Church) for many prominent priests who have been "disappeared."

He lists some of the recent goings on of which we are all familiar, but tries to cast some in a disingenuous light to hurt the Church. For instance, he says this of dog John Corapi:

He developed an incredible media ministry to promote the Church's message, but when he was accused of wrongdoing with an adult female, there was no due process, and Fr. Corapi just got fed up and moved on. He describes his disillusionment in a recent video, which every devout Roman Catholic should watch.
I am sure Berto thought that Corapi was a disgusting right wing nutjob right up until he got caught with a woman. He then jumps to unknowable conclusions about the Pavone situation.

Then he drags up priests who have been caught in various levels of wrong doing that have been disciplined and/or have left the Church. Of course, if the Church did nothing about these people they would be guilty of coverup. When they act swiftly they are guilty of, you guessed it, coverup.
Yet, while all this seems to be happening now, we seem to have a bad memory and we forget this apparent animosity of the Church toward priests that are well known, charismatic figures and strong leaders has been going on for a long time. Regardless of the crimes they may or may not have committed, let's look back to the 1980s, 1990s and into the year Boston seems to have made the whole thing explode in 2001-2002.
He then lists several priest who are credibly accused or even admitted baddies and classifies it as animosity toward prominent and charismatic priests.

If anything, I think that most of these cases show that the Church has been too lenient and granted too much independence to prominent and charismatic priests including Berto himself.

Fr. Cutie was a bad priest. Berto is a bad man.

Character Without Values?

There is a very interesting article in the NY Times on the value of character in education. First a few snippets and then some commentary.

For the headmaster of an intensely competitive school, Randolph, who is 49, is surprisingly skeptical about many of the basic elements of a contemporary high-stakes American education. He did away with Advanced Placement classes in the high school soon after he arrived at Riverdale; he encourages his teachers to limit the homework they assign; and he says that the standardized tests that Riverdale and other private schools require for admission to kindergarten and to middle school are “a patently unfair system” because they evaluate students almost entirely by I.Q. “This push on tests,” he told me, “is missing out on some serious parts of what it means to be a successful human.”

The most critical missing piece, Randolph explained as we sat in his office last fall, is character — those essential traits of mind and habit that were drilled into him at boarding school in England and that also have deep roots in American history. “Whether it’s the pioneer in the Conestoga wagon or someone coming here in the 1920s from southern Italy, there was this idea in America that if you worked hard and you showed real grit, that you could be successful,” he said. “Strangely, we’ve now forgotten that. People who have an easy time of things, who get 800s on their SAT’s, I worry that those people get feedback that everything they’re doing is great. And I think as a result, we are actually setting them up for long-term failure. When that person suddenly has to face up to a difficult moment, then I think they’re screwed, to be honest. I don’t think they’ve grown the capacities to be able to handle that.”
I believe this to be true. Chief among these missing character attributes in perseverance, but more on that later. But, as is typical, since this is the NY Times, we veer a little off course.

It was, in other words, exactly what Randolph and Levin had been looking for, separately, even if neither of them had quite known it. Seligman and Peterson consulted works from Aristotle to Confucius, from the Upanishads to the Torah, from the Boy Scout Handbook to profiles of Pokémon characters, and they settled on 24 character strengths common to all cultures and eras. The list included some we think of as traditional noble traits, like bravery, citizenship, fairness, wisdom and integrity; others that veer into the emotional realm, like love, humor, zest and appreciation of beauty; and still others that are more concerned with day-to-day human interactions: social intelligence (the ability to recognize interpersonal dynamics and adapt quickly to different social situations), kindness, self-regulation, gratitude.

In most societies, Seligman and Peterson wrote, these strengths were considered to have a moral valence, and in many cases they overlapped with religious laws and strictures. But their true importance did not come from their relationship to any system of ethics or moral laws but from their practical benefit: cultivating these strengths represented a reliable path to “the good life,” a life that was not just happy but also meaningful and fulfilling.

I too believe in the practical benefits of good character, but to suggest their importance, or the value of values has nothing to do with morality represents wishful thinking of those who know too well their own character deficiencies. To confirm this, we need only read on a few paragraphs.
What appealed to Levin about the list of character strengths that Seligman and Peterson compiled was that it was presented not as a finger-wagging guilt trip about good values and appropriate behavior but as a recipe for a successful and happy life. He was wary of the idea that KIPP’s aim was to instill in its students “middle-class values,” as though well-off kids had some depth of character that low-income students lacked. “The thing that I think is great about the character-strength approach,” he told me, “is it is fundamentally devoid of value judgment.”
Promoting character without value judgement is like trying to re-invent bread without the yeast.

Yet, there are positives to be taken out of this. The recognition, even if skewed, that character counts. A thirsty man does not at first think of the source from which the water springs. Yet, over time, if he is an honest fellow he will discover what countless generations before us took for granted. God is the source of the character you seek.

Forcibly Baptizing the Internet

Marc Barnes blogs at Bad Catholic and currently attends Franciscan University. He'll be guest blogging here once a week for the next month. Here's his first post:

Once upon a time in a galaxy obnoxiously close to home, there was a boy and a girl. Their names were Jack and Jill, respectively. One day, Jack approached Jill, desiring fervently to have an intellectual discussion over Some Very Important Issues . He began speaking, and oh dearest reader you won’t believe what he did: He projected his voice loudly so all his friends and neighbors would hear. His friends and neighbors weighed in on what he was saying, so he took their words into account and included them - just as loudly - in his conversation with Jill. He quoted her responses exactly and analyzed each one of them, taking the time to correct basic grammatical mistakes she had made. He didn’t make eye contact with her. He felt very happy that his neighbors and friends were listening. When he had finished, Jill calmly shot Jack in the chest and he died.

If Jack’s behavior seems strange, realize that only really made one mistake; he thought he was still online. And thus he paid the ultimate price. (As a side note, it took Jill twenty years to feel even a slight twinge of regret.)

As Catholics we have a unique duty to baptize the Internet. To inject within its dehumanized, impersonal nature the strain of a soul, some semblance of person-hood. That might seem like over-dramatization, but is this not the message the Church has been screaming for the past hundred years? That absolute Capitalism is evil because it regards man as a mere economic tool, that Communism and Socialism are evil because they regard man as no more than a part in the State’s whole, that pornography is evil because it devalues real men and women - children of God - into impersonal objects of Lust? The list could go on, but the theme remains the same: This modern age is in the habit of depersonalizing Just About Everything, and the Catholic Church says, “Stop.”

Now, the Internet is currently the King of Depersonalization, and I hold that it is just as important to resist its reduction of men and women into a name and profile picture as it is to resist any of the other attacks on the human person we mentioned. But it’s a truth that the Catholic who might adequately resist the evils of objectification in every other aspect of life - he might even be a die-hard Distributist - will still blithely resort to Jackism as the proper method of online communication. A cloud of ignorance fogs the mind logging onto Facebook, a cloud that blurs the reality that individuals are present behind each Liberal Nutcase Note, Desperately Atheistic Status Update, and every article, blog post, and video that we disagree with. And thus messages, rebuttals, witnesses and Truth itself becomes distorted under the murky layers of Pride, annoyance, sarcasm and depersonalization.

I believe I have pinpointed the element of the Almighty Internet that invites this kind of behavior: it is The Stage. When we comment, when we reply, we are never really speaking to the author and source of our disagreement. We are speaking to him and to to a few hundred others who we hope will think we’re wise. Our motives in Internet communication are inherently split; the desire to get across a point meets the desire to be appreciated/not seen as stupid and perhaps to garner a few ‘likes’ in the process. It’s not something we’d ever do in real life, for fear of the wrathful retribution of Jill, but online we are yelling our conversations, whether we use ALL CAPS or otherwise.

So what’s a Catholic to do? A couple things jump immediately to mind, and I will list them here. First and foremost, pray. There’s nothing like praying for someone to realize their incredible, infinite and awesome value. So pray a Hail Mary before and after every rebutting/argumentative comment. Before, because even the briefest reflection on Our Blessed Mother will reveal to us any arrogance, Pride, selfishness or vanity in our written language. After, because any revelation of the Truth - especially if the conversation focuses around the person of Christ - ultimately comes from God. Pray therefore, that your defense of Him and His Church will fall on hearts receptive to the Gospel.

Secondly, work within your power to make an online conversation personal. This can be achieved in the language you use, but even more obviously: Ask if the individual would like discuss the matter privately, over email or chat. If the situation allows it - i.e you’re not in conversation with a potential stalker - offer to talk about it over Skype or a phone call. It’s bold, I know, but personalize the impersonal. Even if the Person Who Is Wrong On The Internet doesn’t take you up on your offer, you’ve made an extremely important statement: This is not about me, this is not about how I hold up in a debate, this is not about the appreciation of my peers or the angering of your own, this about the Truth.

Then read Matthew Warner. Follow this religiously.

And lastly - though it certainly only chases down a small shot of delicious What Can Be Done - be willing to lose. Be willing to realize when some one is venting and is closed to Reason. Be willing to laugh at mistakes in your own argument, admit them, and correct them brilliantly. Be willing to lose a battle to win the war.

My name is Marc Barnes, I’m an 18 year old student at Franciscan University, and I ask you to consider: Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Catholics were known as the first human beings to be human beings online?

Note: Please be sure to check out Marc at Bad Catholic.

How I Became a Dad

Men are miserable when their wives are pregnant because, let's face it, we don't have anything to do. Present for the conception, we're then faced with nine months of absolutely no responsibility. We have nothing else to do but wait for the baby to be born. And guys stink at having nothing to do. Fortunately, hormones can make women very demanding during pregnancy so there's never a shortage of things to do. Whether it's fulfilling some strange desire for Tacos or painting the baby's room yellow because she didn't like the shade of teal you painted it last week, there are jobs to do. There are so many layers of paint in the baby's room that I can now touch both walls with my hands while standing in the middle of the room. But that's ok. Men want jobs.

Now there's one exception to my little job rule. My wife asked me to read a parenting book and it sat on my nightstand for months. Every few days I'd cleverly shift it or just leave it open at a random page so she'd think I was reading. I don't do instruction manuals. I figure that I'll figure it out. But because I'd never read a single thing about how babies are born, when my precious baby daughter was first presented to me for the first time by the nurse all I could think was "What's all this gunk all over her? Nobody said anything about gunk. There's no gunk on babies in movies."

And then the doctor handed me a pair of scissors to which my thought was "No. It's a girl. We don't need these." Yeah, I had no idea what I was doing.

One Ring To Rule Them All

So the ring, a ring of power, lay under the water until it was found after many years.

And for years it lay quietly in a small hamlet. But the ring had a mind of its own and it wanted to return to its master.

And now it has.

More than four decades after the 1968 New York Jets miraculously won Super Bowl III, the center on that team, John Schmitt, is celebrating another miracle.

The championship ring Schmitt thought he lost off the Hawaiian coast in 1971 turned up in a lifeguard's estate that was passed on to his great-niece, CBS News affiliate KGMB-TV in Honolulu reported Thursday.

(Scroll down to watch a report from KGMB-TV)

"I couldn't believe it," Schmitt told KGMB-TV. "I mean I honestly couldn't believe it. I mean 40 years."

Schmitt lost the ring during his first surfing lesson in February 1971, a quarter-mile off the beach behind the Royal Hawaiian Hotel in Waikiki. He didn't realize the ring slipped off his finger until he returned to the shore.

"I got a snorkel and some flippers and I went out and I dove until I was blue," Schmitt told KGMB-TV. "I'm not kidding you. It must have been three hours I was out there looking. I couldn't find it anywhere. I was just exhausted. I virtually could not swim or flip my legs anymore and I just went in broken hearted."

But, somehow, lifeguard John Ernstberg found the ring. His great-niece Cindy Saffery told the affiliate that Ernstberg came home one day, gave the ring to his wife, Mary, and they put it in a box.

John Ernstberg died in 1991, and Mary Ernstberg died in 1995. Saffery inherited their estate, which included the ring, and recently took it to an expert to determine whether it was authentic. When she and her husband, Samuel Saffery, found out that it belonged to No. 52, they called the Jets.

One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them

"Straw Dogs" Director Insults South, Christians

I wasn't going to see "Straw Dogs" anyway but now there's no way I'm going to see it.

Here's the funny thing. The director Rod Lurie said the following quote as a way to ameliorate concerns that he was putting down red state folks. Yup. He actually thought this statement would help. You've gotta' read this.

I certainly never intended for the film to send any political message about a conservative-liberal issue, and I do not see this film as a red state/blue state film at all. The reason why I set it in the South is because to me, it was a way of creating the best fish-out-of-water situation that I could find for my lead character. I wanted to find two extremes in lifestyles, and it seemed to me that taking somebody from an intellectual world and planting him into a world that is almost purely physical made sense. Now, some of the greatest thinkers and writers of our time have come out of the South. However, this is a community where everything about it is geared towards violence: football, hunting, preachers talking about a God that will smite you from the earth if you behave badly. It’s the principal difference, I think, between the two films in my opinion. Peckinpah was making a movie about a man, and men in general, who are biologically-inclined to violence. My movie seems to be stating that violence is conditioned from how you grow up and where you live.
Gasp! They like football?! Because we all know that Northerners don't like football, right?

And what's this about preachers talking about God smiting people from the earth? What? I've been going to Church my whole life and there's not a lot of talk of smiting.

Well guess what, Mr. Lurie, those savage beasts from the South and those idiotic smite-fearing Christians aren't going to reach their dirty paws into the pockets and shell out the money to see your idiotic remake of a movie.

This is how Hollywood sees the South and Christians. We're animals with money.

GSU Students Trust SOME Black Women!!

This would be hilarious if it weren't a matter of life and death. This is the state of the pro-choice movement. It's kinda' sad actually. Watch as the pro-choice students just start yelling slogans every time they're faced with conversation from pro-life speaker Ryan Bomberger.

Hilariously, they repeatedly chant "Georgia State Students Trust Black Women" but then when a real live actual black woman asks them something they refuse to listen and start chanting again.

Ryan writes of his experience at Life News.

Michelle Obama for Parental Notification?

Today Michelle Obama will hold a press conference with restaurants today to tout an iniative that kid's meals come with sides of fruit. If a child wants fries an adult has to approve the fries.

Seriously.

All kids’ meals will automatically come with a side of fruit or vegetables and eight ounces of 1 percent milk unless an adult requests a substitute, Drew Madsen, president and chief operating officer of Orlando, Fla.-based Darden, told The Associated Press.

So the Obamas are for parental notification...for french fries. They're still against it for abortion though. What a wacky world we live in.

Leading Atheist Calls for "Eradication" of Fundamentalist Christians

Al Stefanelli, the Georgia State Director for American Atheists, today called for the "eradication" of fundamentalist Christians. You might remember this group as the one who recently filed a lawsuit to remove the WTC cross.

Just in case you don't know, "fundamentalist" just means someone who goes to Church more than Christmas or Easter.

If there was any doubt that "eradication" was always where "the brights" were heading this should put an end to that. He seems to think we want atheists dead so he wants to get us before we get him.

Stefanelli wrote at Atheists.org:

The fact is that fundamentalist Christians and radical Muslims are not interested in coexisting or getting along. They have no desire for peace. They do not want to sit down with us in diplomatic efforts to iron out our differences and come to an agreement on developing an integrated society.

They want us to die.

Their interpretation of the Bible and Koran are such that there is no other course of action but to kill the infidel, and if anyone believes otherwise they are only fooling themselves. It is not just in the best interests of atheists to be intolerant of fundamental Christianity and radical Islam, but it is also in the best interest of mainstream believers within these faiths, as well. Moderates and even Progressives who stand in support of extremists just because there is a claim to the same deity are not doing themselves any favors. Fundamental Christians make all Christians look bad and radical Muslims make all Muslims look bad.

The growing ranks of fundamental Christians and radical Muslims should be of concern to everyone who is not part of these two groups. Everyone. Again, bigotry, discrimination, hatred, coercion, terrorism, slavery, misogyny and everything else that is part and parcel of fundamental Christianity and radical Islam should not be tolerated and anyone who agrees with this needs to adopt extremist points of view that includes the intolerance of their very existence. The only reason these groups exist is because they are allowed to, and we, as a society, are allowing them to...

But the underbelly of fundamentalist Christianity and radical Islam does not operate in the legal system. They don’t respond to lawsuits, letters, amicus briefs or other grass-roots campaigns and they must, must, must be eradicated. As long as they are allowed to exist, we will continue to be inundated with accounts of buses, buildings, markets and abortion clinics being blown up, rape victims being murdered for adultery, wives being beaten (sometimes to death), airplanes being flown into buildings, people being tortured and sometimes beheaded for blasphemy, people being burned for witchcraft and sorcery and all the other horrific, inhumane and insane practices that are part of fundamental Christianity and Radical Islam.

If we don’t take a stand and, as a society, insist that these doctrines and beliefs are treated just the same as they would be if religion were not part of the equation, we will become extinct not due to natural selection, but at the hands of those who believe that the supernatural has made the selection.
Man, who would've thought that atheists could be so violent.

Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot were kinda' fond of "eradicating" too, weren't they?

Update: Stefanelli now seems to be saying that he didn't mean eradicate eradicate. He just meant filing more lawsuits or something. Puhleeeze.

Close it up folks. Our culture is over. There is nothing left to save.

Baby Power!!!

Facebook can be a horrible time sucking site that now seems to annoy lots of people with the new set up and parameters. But I discovered this past week it can create a web of hope, positivity and Baby Power.

Sept 6th friends of ours, Jason and Marion had to bring their 5 week old son Clayton Duke to Children's Hospital in LA. He was diagnosed with "Ventricular Septal Defect and Aortic Coarctation", or what is known medically as "little baby heart disease". On Sept 8th Clayton had open heart surgery. He was tough and came through it well but as anyone who has spent time in hospitals and ICU's knows there is a roller coaster aspect to all of this. Clay has had breathing problems and now there is talk of a pacemaker.

All through this Jason and Marion have been keeping us all updated via Facebook. Even sharing pictures of Clayton's baptism in the ICU.

I am unsure who started it but someone took a picture of their baby with a sign reading "Baby Power". Many people have followed suit letting them know that their babies, dogs, dolls and everyone is sending "Baby Power" to Clayton Duke. And now someone has put together a video of all the pics and at the end of Clayton and family.

Now, the community that I am in consists mainly of comedians and actors who use Facebook in snarky and entertaining ways. But through this everyone has shown that our community cares deeply about each other and have been a true support for this family. And as we are scattered all over the country we stay connected. Now a site that does that can't be all bad.

I ask you to pray for them and a quick recovery with the help of some "Baby Power" for Clayton.

Thanks. Matt and Pat's sister

Nic Cage Wakes Up to Naked Man Eating a Fudgsicle in His Bedroom

Dude. This had to be the scariest moment ever. I've gotta' tell you though, if I was thinking about messing with the head of a celebrity I wouldn't pick Nicholas Cage who seems only slightly saner than Charlie Sheen but less sane than Wayne Newton.

Here's the thing. You can't mess with Nicholas Cage's head. It's pre-messed. It doesn't need your shenanigans. Even a naked man waking him up while holding a fudgsicle is probably redundant.

Anyway, here's what happened. And it's pretty darn scary.

For actor Nicolas Cage, making the new thriller movie "Trespass" hit close to home.

Cage, at the Toronto film festival along with director Joel Schumacher promoting the film about a home invasion, said that he has actually lived through the nightmare in real life.

"It was two in the morning. I was living in Orange County at the time and was asleep with my wife. My two-year old at the time was in another room. I opened my eyes and there was a naked man wearing my leather jacket eating a Fudgesicle in front of my bed," he told reporters on Wednesday.

"I know it sounds funny ... but it was horrifying."
I'm not sure what's worse -that the dude was wearing Cage's leather jacket or he was holding a fudgsicle. Yeah, definitely the fudgsicle.

But God bless Cage because he didn't freak out and beat the dude. He talked to him, realized the guy had mental problems, and called the cops to come help him. Cage didn't even press charges.

Dude, if my kid were in the other room and that guy was in my house (fudgsicle or not) you could consider my freak out button pushed.

I wonder what's a scarier moment for Cage. That incident or remembering this scene from The Wicker Man?

Waxman: "Jews Protecting their Wealth"

Well thank goodness, this quote from Congressman Henry Waxman doesn't play into any stereotypes:

There are Jews who are trending toward the Republican Party, some of it because of their misunderstanding of Obama’s policies in the Middle East, and some of it, quite frankly, for economic reasons. They feel they want to protect their wealth, which is why a lot of well-off voters vote for Republicans.”
Don't worry, he's Jewish and he's a Democrat so everyone will just assume he meant well. Nothing to see here.

And just because CMR has a newly instituted rule requiring any mention of Waxman must include a picture with the caption "Some Pig."

Dead Cat Bounce

So Obama, fresh from vacation, called for a joint session of Congress to release his long awaited jobs plan. Obama wanted several things from this show, the actual creation of jobs not among them. This was evidenced by his plan which was filled with the same ol' disastrous failed policies that got him in this mess. What he wanted most of all is to be thwarted in his effort so that he could run against the Congressional GOP. In doing so he had to try to convince Americans he was really trying. And like just about everything Obama has done lately, he failed.

CNN Poll: President gets no bounce from speech, but disapproval rating peaks

Washington (CNN) - President Barack Obama didn't score any political points with his speech on jobs to a joint session of Congress last Thursday. According to a new CNN/ORC International poll released Tuesday, the president's approval rating stands at 43 percent, virtually unchanged from the 45 percent approval rating in the previous CNN poll.
So Americans, still clinging to their religion, guns, and common sense were not buying his charade. Mr. Obama should aquaint himself with PT Barnum's aphorism on fooling people all of the time.

And if there is a light at the end of this tunnel, it is not visible through the fog of bad news of his own making that surrounds the President. Peter Wehner sums it up nicely in this paragraph.
Imagine you’re in the Obama White House, and this is what you face. Democrats lose a special election in a congressional district they have controlled since the 1920s and which was framed as a referendum on the president. There’s a possible scandal brewing over the White House’s effort to rush federal reviewers for a decision on a nearly half-billion dollar loan to a solar-panel manufacturer, Solyndra. The most recent Census Report shows median household earnings fell for the third consecutive year, back to 1996 levels. A record number of Americans are in poverty. In Afghanistan, the Taliban mounted a fierce assault on the U.S. embassy and NATO military headquarters in Kabul. A new CNN/ORC poll shows Obama’s disapproval rating has reached a new high while the number of Americans who think he is a strong leader has dropped to a new low. And that’s just today.
That darn Bush.

Stop the Dietocracy!

First Lady Michelle Obama will announce today the headway she and the Obama dietocracy have made in strong arming restaurants to reduce portion sizes as part of her “Let’s Move’ campaign against obesity.

“The Childhood Obesity Task Force Report”–commissioned as part of Mrs. Obama’s “Let’s Move” project, “specifically calls on restaurants to, “consider their portion sizes, improve children’s menus, and make healthy options the default choice whenever possible."
The "or else" is implied.

I always find it a bit ironic the interest the Obamas take in regulating stomachs while completely ignoring wombs. So much for personal choice, huh? In fact, the womb seems to be the one place on earth immune from Nanny State overreach.

But as someone who doesn't think it's the government's business what I throw down my gullet I've come up with a few handy catchphrases to ward off the dietocracy:

Keep your administration out of my abdomen!
Every burger, a wanted burger!
Get your statutes off my stomach!
No directions for my digestion!
My cheese fries, My choice!
Don't like pie? Don't have pie.
Get your bureaucracy out of my belly.

If you've got any catchphrases that could really help my movement please put them in the combox. It's kind of a grassroots thing at this point. We meet at Sizzler. A few times a week.

Obama: "If You Love Me Pass The Bill"

OK. This is more than a little creepy.

Ah, conditional love!

This is a little too cult of personality for me.

Dear Mz. Sanger, You Did It!!

Dear Mz. Sanger,
You did it. Your every racist eugenic fantasy has come true.

Jennie Stone of Live Action wrote a piece today detailing how Planned Parenthood founder wasn't truly "pro-choice."

Margaret Sanger, the founder of Planned Parenthood, is often hailed as a champion of women’s rights in historical texts and classes. However, chronically neglected is her true disdain for minority groups in America and how she saw birth control as a way of limiting the populations of those she deemed unworthy of bearing children, even going so far as to advocate that married couples must submit applications in order to have children!

Sanger saw minorities (especially blacks) as “human weeds” that she believed “never should have been born” and published in her magazine, the “Birth Control Review,” that birth control was intended to “create a race of thoroughbreds,” and ensure that society had “more children from the fit, less from the unfit.”

In 1934, Sanger suggested that the government should consider putting birth control chemicals in the food and water supplies in certain areas of the nation, specifically in urban areas that were dominated by minority groups. She suggested an imposed law that would disallow women from having children without first obtaining a permit from the government—a permit that would good for only one baby—and if approved, the couple would receive an antidote to counter the effects of the involuntarily ingested birth control chemicals.
Although Planned Parenthood today honors Sanger, they often leave out her racist and eugenics views.

But that's not to say that Planned Parenthood and its advocates don't believe in it anymore.

It's no accident that many more abortion clinics are found in areas dominated by poor and minorities. Accident?

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Vader Ginsburg openly told the NY Times: “Frankly I had thought that at the time [Roe v. Wade] was decided...there was concern about population growth and particularly growth in populations that we don’t want to have too many of.”

Who would it be we don't we want "too many of?" She said this concerning Medicaid funding of abortion.

Jonah Goldberg reminds us of another instance of outrageous racist eugenics.
In 1992, Ron Weddington, co-counsel in the Roe v. Wade case, wrote a letter to President-elect Clinton, imploring him to rush RU-486 — a.k.a. “the abortion pill” — to market as quickly as possible.

“(Y)ou can start immediately to eliminate the barely educated, unhealthy and poor segment of our country,” Weddington insisted. All the president had to do was make abortion cheap and easy for the populations we don’t want. “It’s what we all know is true, but we only whisper it. . . . Think of all the poverty, crime and misery . . . and then add 30 million unwanted babies to the scenario. We lost a lot of ground during the Reagan-Bush religious orgy. We don’t have a lot of time left.”

Weddington offered a clue about who, in particular, he had in mind: “For every Jesse Jackson who has fought his way out of the poverty of a large family, there are millions mired in poverty, drugs and crime.” Ah, right. Jesse Jackson. Got it.
Jill Stanek recently reported on the breakdown of abortions by zip code in the New York area. It turns out over 60% of black babies are aborted there. In some neighborhoods the number is well over that.

And even worse, Medicaid is paying for many of them.

So we all should recognize that even though most people think eugenics went the way of Hitler, it's still alive and well - Sanger style.
