Outrage!! Georgetown Chooses Sebelius For Commencement

Georgetown University has taken sides against the Catholic Church, there is no other way to interpret it.

While the US Catholic Bishops are pulling out all the stops trying to repeal the anti-Catholic and anti-Constitutional HHS Mandate requiring Catholic institutions provide free access to contraception, abortofacients, and sterilization, Georgetown University has chosen the author of the horrible mandate as this year's commencement speaker for Georgetown University Public Policy Institute.

There is no other way to interpret this other than as a direct challenge to the authority of th Catholic Bishops and as clear statement as to which side the University is on in this crucial standoff.

This afternoon, Georgetown announced the speakers for each school’s commencement address. Here is the list:
David Simon, creator of the critically acclaimed television dramas “The Wire” and “Treme” will be speaking to the College.

Dr. Mark Green, senior director of the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition and former ambassador to Tanzania is the speaker for the School of Nursing & Health.

Ela R. Bhatt, founder of the Self-Employed Women’s Association, the largest union in India, and a consultant for UNICEF, will address the School of Foreign Service.

Tim O’Shaughnessy (B ’04), CEO and co-founder of LivingSocial will be speaking to the McDonough School of Business.

The speaker for the senior convocation is Helen O’Really (F ’03), current judicial clerk on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

List of speakers for other Georgetown schools:
...
Former governor of Kansas and current secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius, will be addressing the Georgetown Public Policy Institute.
This is an outrage and a direct challenge to the Bishops. Cardinal Wuerl, Cardinal Dolan,and the whole USCCB needs to immediately revoke Georgetown's status as a Catholic University.

In this crucial debate, you are either with us or against us. Georgetown has taken the other side. If there was any question left about whether Georgetown was still Catholic, that question has now been answered.

Update: You can sign a petition sponsored by The Cardinal Newman Society at the website GeorgetownScandal.com.

The term Catholic college makes as much sense these days as the term Muslum Porkchop

I'm shocked, shocked that this could happen at a Jesuit university.

There are many faithful Catholic Colleges and Universities. It is time to recognize and support them and to remove Catholic from the name of those who are blatently not following the Magisterial teachings of the Catholic Church. It brings Luke 10:16 to mind - and they ain't hearing.

Georgetown wil probably give Sebelius an honorary degree in abortion, contraception and denying the immortal soul of the person.

Shocked. Shocked, I say.

Nothing charitable in causing scandal to the faithful. Souls are in peril.

It's completely obvious that the secular savages are sticking their dirty thumbs in Catholics' eyes. A bold, decisive move is needed here by the USCCB. As the immortal Bugs Bunny said many times, "Of course, you realize this means war!"

The real problem is not Obama, but the Catholic Church itself: it is only where the bishops and priests betray the Church, that scenarios like this ever emerge. Georgetown should have lost it's Catholic status a very long time ago, and the Bishops never should have supported so-called health reform, the intention was obvious.

If a university can get away with it, it is certain many parishes teach the same garbage as it does. Georgetown should be de-Catholicized, simple as that!

That ought to be said to Sebelius

I agree that through the bishop's laxity, much evil has been permitted to rampage throughout Catholic institutions. But while we may be entirely correct to fault the fire department for allowing the blaze to get out of hand, the fact that the buildings are still on fire and that there are plenty of places mostly untouched but threatened by it, we need to goad and encourage the fireman what their job is.

In response to Marc's statement that the Church should have never supported the health reform...Which part should they have been against? Universal health coverage? Mandatory coverage for pre existing conditions?....
The problem is not with health reform. Our health care system bankrupts people every day! The problem is with politicians inserting things into it that is not health care..eg: artificial contraception and abortion.
I agree though, Georgetown University should be severely chastised by the church and any connections thereof should be severed.

Why be surprised? Secular heretics seized control of Holy Mother Church 50 years ago. Smart money would not bet on restoration of orthodoxy in the next century. Let the sophists parse the Gospel pronouncement: "On this rock I will build my church..."

Rejoice! We are all Unitarians (bless them) now!

So, are young Catholics at Georgetown going to organize a protest?

No one protested in support of Paul Ryan when he spoke at Georgetown. There were a few liberal Catholic students with a banner.

Catholic conservatives riduled them and there small numbers from the comfort of their keyboards, judgin and condemning.

Stop bitching and start acting. Someone needs to start organizing Catholic kids at Georgetown.

Not many of them post here probably but readers here have kids, nephews, nieces, and grand-kids they can encourage.

The Jesuits involved in running the place, if there are any left, ought to be censured. And if the Jesuits won't cooperate, the Uni ought to be declared no longer Catholic. Ditto for the "Jesuits" - they are frauds.

Georgetown needs to be stripped of their Catholic status ASAP. They've deserved for a long time - this should be the last straw. We are sick of the charade. At this point, I consider Georgetown an open enemy of the Church, and I would not set foot on their campus for any reason. Let them become secular - at least it would be honest. We need to let these wretched institutions go...it is a much worse scandal to keep them than to admit they are corrupt to the core.

Anyone who has been in the light of Catholic Truth should not be shocked at this. Father Hardon SJ, said 20 years ago that the schism is in effect defacto. He and only a few Jesuits are the last faithful of of the order.

Anyone who could not see this and more of the same coming has their head in the sand. The only hope is what the Virgin Mary has said at Medjugorje....Pray the rosary and fast on Wednesday's and Friday's.

Cardinal Wuerl ought to assert himself immediately and put a stop to this nonsense.
Unfortunately, I do not believe he has the courage to do so.
His motto seems to be "go along to get along".
Truly sad for the Church.

Fred said...

Cardinal Wuerl ought to step into this immediately and stop this nonsense.

Unfortunately, I don't believe he has the courage to do it, based on his previous feckless positions and wishy-washy statements.

We need much stronger, principled leaders in the Church than we have, especially in Washington, Albany, etc., etc.

ND is undoubtedly delighted to see this. Another pillar of American Catholic education that can exempt itself from Ex Corde Exclessiae. Another opportunity to laugh in the face of the USCCB. Another outrage for a local bishop to confront in terms of sadness and disappoinment. It looks like there will be no courageous response from Cardinal Wuerl. Evil wins again! Saint Michael's sword remains sheathed. When will we wake up to the fact that the secularists are our enemies? They seek the destruction of religious liberty today and of religion tomorrow. Georgetown: What do you plan to cover up, hide away or destroy so as not to offend your HHS guest?

Poor Father Schall. How does he do it, remaining at Georgetown year after year? I suppose he is like Abraham, begging the Lord that if ten good men can be found Sodom might be saved. Surely there are others like him at Georgetown; let us pray for them. May their influence on the rest of the faculty grow.

Bishop Jenky: It's time to save the Jesuits from themselves. Please speak out on this with "full heart and voice".

Given that the folks at Georgetown have demonstrated coolness to reason and toward the Faith, they might grow a set of ears and be moved to reform if we hit them in the pocketbook. The only thing administrators understand is money or the lack thereof. Change will come with a little motivation.

Appeal to Catholic alumni. Speak the simple truth: Georgetown has abandoned its Catholic identity. Redirect your hard earned dollars to faithful colleges where your money will be put toward ethical research and the formation of young people who love Jesus and His Church.

I do not support the HHS mandate. But I do support Universities that do not limit their speakers to those with whom they agree, and do not exclude speakers with whom the Church disagrees, even on the most fundamental issues.

One can search for the truth by hearing those with whom one disagrees.

Georgetown is Catholic in name onlly for many other, better reasons.

Wow....another bold, totally unpredictable, gesture from a Jesuit University. What brave, unconventional folks they are over there at G town. Yawnnnn...That is SO Notre Dame, dudes. Wake me when they make some news.

In reply to "I do not support the HHS mandate. But I do support Universities that do not limit their speakers to those with whom they agree, and do not exclude speakers with whom the Church disagrees, even on the most fundamental issues."

Catholic schools cannot honor those who are pro-choice because it would lead people to believe that the Catholic Church as a whole condones the killing of children.

Scandal is a word or action evil in itself, which occasions another's spiritual ruin.

I believe Georgetown's actions will lead many away from God (scandal) & since our top priority should be life (both the innocent in the womb & the life of our soul) we must not take this lightly.

In fact, Georgetown should br reminded... "If need be, a Catholic University must have the courage to speak uncomfortable truths which do not please public opinion, but which are necessary to safeguard the authentic good of society." - Ex Corde Ecclesiae - John Paul II

I have no expectations of actions by these Cardinals. There is talk here and there but the 'walk' is absent.

The Cardinals wear red to signify that they are willing to shed their blood for the sake of Christ and His Holy Truth. Have not seen evidence of that.

Ex communicate all who back, promote or support the position on abortion NOW!

Tristan @ 11:37: It isn't a question of academic freedom, but of a
purportedly Catholic university honoring Secretary Sebelius. She
has not been invited to a debate over the HHS mandate, but rather
she has been given the honor of addressing, unchallenged, the
graduates of one of the schools. In effect, the university is holding
her up as an example it would like its students to follow.

This is not an issue of free speech or of academic freedom. No one
is suggesting that Secretary Sebelius couldn't come to Georgetown
and participate in a debate over the HHS mandate. Sadly, that's not
what's happening here.

Anonymous said...

Clinton: Secretary Sebelius is an outcast in the eyes of the Church. Anyone who has been disciplined by his/her bishop(as she has been) is not living a life that is in full communion with the Church. Her support of abortion is her problem. She merits no honorable recognition by the Church or any of its legitimately affiliated institutions. If Georgetown wishes to honor her with this invitation then they should surrender their Catholic identity and become a private secular institution. Their local archbishop can assist in that process. From where I stand, he should do it ASAP. An added benefit for the school of medicine could include the opportunity for a complete training program in OB/GYN that includes every pharmacologic and surgical manipulation of the female reproductive system imaginable. Secretary Sebelius might even wish to endow the department chair in the name of her old friend George Tiller. Now that's solid secularism.

Anonymous said...

And as usual NOTHING will be done. But let a priest refuse Holy Communion to a practicing Buddist active lesbian and he will be suspended ASAP. But the Jesuits continue their heretical and scandalous practices and the silence from Cardinal Wuerl is deafening. But this is hardly the end. Just wait until the Alfred E. Smith dinner before the presidential election. Obama will be invited, even though he is persecuting the Church, and the cardinals (including Dolan)will be falling all over themselves praising him. Just wait.

Anonymous said...

Georgetown has apparently become satan's territory. At least they don't have a Saint's name plastered on the school. Let's see if those on charge of our Church will let this happen. If anything, I believe Kathleen Sebelius should have been excommunicated a long time ago. POPE BENEDICT, PLEASE HELP THE UNITED STATES CHURCH. The lambs need you!

Mary De Voe said...

The Notre Dame 85 might make an appearance. I heard the Notre Dame 85 won the last round in court, especially since the public institution of Georgetown belongs to all the people, all the time, on the Catholic Church's dime and on the taxpayers' dime.

Gail Finke said...

Someone commented on this at another site, saying that the Jesuits don't really run Georgetown -- it is now totally run by its board of directors. This person (who went by initials, don't know if it is a man or a woman but will guess man) said that he knew all about Georgetown, had gone there, and had kept in touch with it for years, and that the BOD and president make all the decisions. University governance is complicated, and if this information is correct people ought to know. You can't fix something it you don't know what is actually going on.

Anonymous said...

To the Jesuit community at Georgetown: Leave the Catholic Church. Form your own sect and define a new path for yourselves. Your institution has become an embarassment for those of us who try to adhere to Church teachings. You could very well start a trend. There are certainly other schools the should do likewise.

Maybe she could sit in on a class of Constitutional Law while she is there and learn what the 1st amendment means;

or biology and learn when the life of a human being begins;

or sociology to learn that increased use of contraception actually leads to more unwed pregnancies, abortions, and STD's;

or maybe statistics first so she could see why the IOM studies are not reliable;

no wait, an ethics class so she learn that the ends do not justify the means and that persons are not to be used;

actually she could start with a conversation with a good priest, to learn about her immortal soul, the 10 commandments and the Gospel... do they have good priests at Georgetown?

Anonymous said...

No coach, there probably aren't any good priests left at Georgetown. If there were any then we would have heard from at least one of them by now. A good priest would in a situation like this would speak out forcefully and honestly. I bet that is forbidden in
The New Jesuit Catholic Church. There are a couple of good priests remaining at ND. Fr. Wilson Miscamble,C.S.C. comes to mind. He might be willing to meet with Secretary Sebelius if and when she decides to renounce her satanic way of life. Hopefully that would be an "off campus" meeting. Some of us "old timers" are still fussy about who steps upon that sacred ground(I know that it was defiled long ago). I guess it can't do any harm to pray for her conversion, maybe for the Jesuits too--and let's include the Taliban for good measure.
