No Jesus Allowed for Police Chaplains

Police chaplains in this North Carolina town are allowed to pray but they're not allowed to pray to Jesus.

WSOC reports:

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department chaplains have been told that they cannot invoke the name of Jesus in prayers at public events.

“When I heard this I was sad," said Pastor Terry Sartain, who has been a chaplain with CMPD for seven years.

Sartain said he learned of the policy when he got a phone call before a recent promotion ceremony saying he could not use Jesus' name in his invocation.

"I asked if I could withdraw, because Jesus is the only thing I have to bless people with," Sartain said.

He was allowed to withdraw from the ceremony and was told it would hurt his standing as a chaplain.

Major John Diggs, who oversees the chaplain program, said the policy is a matter of respecting that people may have different faiths and that it is not aimed at any one religion or denomination.

Some say the policy is long overdue.

"It's past time when they should've made a policy," said Jim Gronquist, a former Methodist minister who has been a practicing lawyer and member of the American Civil Liberties Union.

Gronquist said it's important to keep the separation between church and state -- in this case, between specific faiths and the police department.

"It's improper to mix up religion with the function of state agents, and as long as they're state agents, they should not be able to do that," Gronquist said.

Controversy is nothing new to the police chaplains. Several resigned two years ago when the department took on a lesbian chaplain.

But Terry Sartain did not walk away then and he said he's not going to leave his ministry with the officers, whatever their beliefs.

“They know when I ride with them that I love them for who they are," Sartain said.

This is not a NC town, but affects the combined police force for the city and county where Charlotte is (so about a million people total).

I wonder why fellows like this resign? Tell them to put it in writing, then refuse to comply, and bless people in Jesus's name anyway. Have them fire you for your beliefs and then sue them for infringing upon your speech rights and your religious freedom. Have them throw you in jail for it. This soft attrition from the public square is puzzling. I mean, you're going to lose your job anyway, right?

We have lessons a-plenty for this working for liberals. Most of the time they get a free pass for being pains in the a&&.

What is the purpose of a Chaplains if not for a religious perspective? This is merely enforced atheism, a religion as far as I am concerned, which means the state is practicing a religion which is opposed even to the mention of Christ.

I am ready for a Catholic benevolent despot. This US government is in the tank.
I cannot believe this country is where I grew up. Nevertheless, it is not surprising. It is tragic.

Hahaha...so, you want what, Karl, the fucking Pope installed as the leader of the United States? Move to the fucking Vatican.

First they take prayer out of school.
Then there is Gay Pride Month in the U.S. military.
Now a police chaplain can't mention the word
"Christ " or "Jesus".
Karl is right! This is enforcing atheism. That last comment isn't worth a response. This web isn't intended to insult anyone's religion.

Anon @6:07, it would be better if we kept this comment space as clear of curse words as possible. You could have made the same point without vulgarity.

What happened to moderating these posts? Anonymous may not agree with what Karl posted but he needs to keep his comments civilized. I want to be able to read the comments without assault from vile words.

I choked when I read anonymous and his profane comments aimed at the Pope. No wonder he posts as anonymous

Annie, the only thing you choked on is the pope's dick.

Jesus Christ is a PERSON, and unless it is proved in a court of law, that Jesus Christ broke the law by rising from the dead, or committed treason against Caesar, there is no civil law on earth that can remove a PERSON from the public square.

The public square is owned in joint and common tenancy bY each and every PERSON, NOT BY THE GOVERNMENT and prayer ban was never put on the ballot, those weaselly, slithering communists would imprison us in their narrowmindedness, their closed heartedness, their selfishishness and their ignorance personified.

Mary, I think your previous comment describes you more than me. Also, I highly suggest taking a course in English communication, as your scattershot triple comment blather fest was unintelligible.

Jesus Christ is a PERSON and may not be shutout of the public square. And as a PERSON, If Jesus Christ is shut out of the public square, all representative government falls, because Jesus Christ represents every human being ever created by God “their Creator”.
WE have these truths inscribed in our founding principles and therefore, anybody who seeks to abrogate our founding principles commits treason.

10:49 You may say what you will about me, the TRUTH stands on its own. WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF-EVIDENT" and prayer ban was never put on the ballot, those weaselly, slithering communists would imprison us in their narrowmindedness, their closed heartedness, their selfishishness and their ignorance personified." What is generous about prayer ban and Jesus Christ being forbidden by narrowmindedness, closeheartedness, selfishness and ignorance personified? FREEDOM

32,000 flee homes in Colorado fires and "WE, the people", cannot invoke Jesus Christ. What is not ignorance personified? Men are laying their lives on the line, and Jesus Christ cannot be invoked? How smart and generous is that? When it becomes time for you to die, and you will most certainly die as it is the condition of man, you will be privileged to invoke the name of Jesus Christ, as I will.

Proof of treason was never presented in criminal court to disenfranchise Jesus Christ, the PERSON of Jesus Christ. Disenfranchising the PERSON of Jesus Christ from the public square is a miscarriage of Justice.

Anonymous: if I couldn't figure out how to sign a name, and mistook name-calling for argument, I wouldn't be condescending to Mary.

You do, however, make an excellent argument against a just, loving, and rational God. Notice I did not say you state one.
