Newsweek Cover: Obama The Second Coming

This Newsweek cover is just laughable. And offensive if you ever get around to stopping laughing.

Yes, this is how they think of Obama in their hearts but in the end, this is just stunt journalism. This is the same as DC killing Superman back in the 90's. They've ceased caring about what they're writing about. Everything is good or bad simply based on how many heads turn to look. It's a stunt.

They've clearly ceased to care about journalism in any way, shape or form. They don't care if what they do is impressive or a car wreck as long as it makes people look. And we all know it's a lot easier to get into a wreck than actually accomplish something impressive.

I suppose I could complain that I am being discriminated against because of the color of my skin, but I don't think that is so. I think I am being discriminated against because I am not stupid. I used to read this rag (along with everything else) in high school and clearly stupid people are being rewarded with high paying jobs. How many complete idiots are needed in that company in order to get that cover out the front door? Women will not save Europe, you don't put the President that you like in a facist pose, and you don't do the second coming thing. Now if you are really smart, you don't like this president, but Newsweek has always been a little bit bent, which is probably why stupidity is now a requirement. National Review ain't doing too good either, which is why I am pretty sure their must some clandestine agency funding this tripe for some reason. The caliber of writing and the basic knowledge set is actually worse than what it was in the early 90s despite having more readily available information on the internet now. They sure can't be making money the old fashioned way with this mess.

And their readership will continue to disappear and they will continue to scratch theirs heads and wonder why.

Isn't Newsweek the one that rebranded itself as specifically liberal? At least they're honest!

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.

Surely some revelation is at hand;
Surely the Second Coming is at hand.
The Second Coming! Hardly are those words out
When a vast image out of Spiritus Mundi
Troubles my sight: a waste of desert sand;
A shape with lion body and the head of a man,
A gaze blank and pitiless as the sun,
Is moving its slow thighs, while all about it
Wind shadows of the indignant desert birds.

The darkness drops again but now I know
That twenty centuries of stony sleep
Were vexed to nightmare by a rocking cradle,
And what rough beast, its hour come round at last,
Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?

Newsweek is still printing?

The only thing Obama is likely to deliver is even higher (and budget-free) levels of spending, leading to economic collapse. Not a recession, nor even a depression, but a collapse. Europe is on the precipice, Canada will lag our collapse by maybe 5 minutes, and China will be holding all those empty I.O.U.s....

Newsweek doesn't publish anymore, so this isn't out there in print format, making it's audience much smaller than the small audience it had a month ago. Thank God for small favors.

I understand why this cover will upset people, but I don't see the big deal. I just see it as a play on words. Obama is starting his second term and has a lot of expectations on him from his base. His base is hoping that he will fulfil in the second term whatever odd fantasies they had when they elected him in 2008. To me, it's just word play and some editor being clever.

There is plenty to be upset about. But our message and opposition to Obama's agenda gets diluted when we waste time on "fakeraversies" like freaking out over magazine covers. This will cause people to take real arguments less seriously.

@Brent: Except that sane people do not identify political figures as messiahs, save as a criticism of those figures perceived messianic pretensions. Unless the politician is Obama.

Well, actually, that's not entirely accurate; there have been political figures in Asia identified with various Buddhist figures, mainly Maitreya, the "Bodhisattva who is to come". Most of them have been crazy cult-leaders. And there was a Japanese warlord, Uesugi Kenshin, whose followers compared him to the Buddhist war-god Bishamonten, and whose motto was "In Earth or Heaven, I alone am worthy of worship."

So...some unfortunate precedents for this kind of thing, actually.
