Pope Francis: The First Jesuit Pope (Updated)
We have Pope Francis. Jorge Mario Bergoglio, SJ is an Argentine cardinal He has served as the Archbishop of Buenos Aires since 1998. He was elevated to the cardinalate in 2001. He was elected Pope on March 13, 2013, taking the papal name Francisco.
This was unexpected by everyone. He's 76 years old.
Bergoglio, according to the Wikipedia page, has distanced himself from liberation theology early in his career.
I'm still awaiting him from behind the curtain. Here he is...
Update: He asked the people there to pray for him before he blessed them. This seems like a wonderful humility.
The bells are ringing.
This is a day of firsts. An amazing day. First Jesuit. First Pope from South America.
Wait, does this mean that I can't make Jesuit jokes anymore?

The election of a Pope is a great reminder of the universality of the Church. 1.2 billion members! What an amazing thing (the Bride of Christ) to be a part of!!!!!
Amazing and did you notice that with his first Papal Blessing, for watching, he gave us a Plenary Indulgence wherever we are! Wow!

"This was unexpected by everyone." Except for God.
Pretty amazing to realize how "one" we are.
God's will be done.
I admit I am lacking education on this, but would anyone explain why he might have chosen the name "Francis" if he is a Jesuit rather than a Franciscan?
Anon,
I'm guessing that Pope Jesus would be a bit presumptions? LOL
St. Francis Xavier...
Let's hear it for the Jesuits! God Bless Francis.
"Wait, does this mean that I can't make Jesuit jokes anymore?"
Just not about this Jesuit. You're such an ordist. (Just kidding, sort of.)
I wonder if he read Weigel's latest book (it's in my local library): _Evangelical Catholicism_? He might have taken Francis (Xavier) due to him being a Jesuit and a prolific missionary. Weigel wrote, "“…Pope John Paul II… taught that the Church does not have a mission, as if 'mission' were one among a dozen things the Church does; rather, the Church is a mission, and everything the Church does is ordered to that mission, which is the proclamation of the Gospel and the conversion of the world to Christ." (pp. 85-86)
I wonder if I get the indulgence because I was on the phone with my sister as she watched it. I was in the pick up line at the school to get my children, however since they attend a Catholic school, the Principal held them a bit over because the new Pope was just about to be announced. So I guess I should be pleased my kids got the indulgence. :)
I'm still going to make Jesuit jokes. They make it too easy.

This just in, Pontiffissimo Francisco Primo is still Pope.
Do we get the indulgence if we watch it rerun online? Oh, new media, you confuse things so....
My wife was not able to watch the pope's first blessing. Will she still get the plenary indulgence for watching the replay?
"The Protodeacon announced that all those who received the blessing, either in person or by radio, television or by the new means of communication receive the plenary indulgence in the form established by the Church." From news.va
He must have chosen St. Francis of Assisi because of his predilection for the poor and forgetfulness of self.
It's obvious that the liturgical renewal started by Pope Benedict has come to an complete stop. Poor Monsignor Guido Marini looked so sad. Why do all these "humble" bishops like to do away with liturgical practices that are ancient. If Pope Pius X, Pope Pius XII and Benedict XVI could come out onto the balcony dressed like popes have ALWAYS dressed, why can't this one? It is not humble to say oh no I not going to do what all my predissesors have done because they were wrong and I am right. Wait...we will see him in a grey tab shirt and black pants before the week is out. And he will have open arms to LCWR, but lets see how he treats the SSPX.
We don't know for sure what the new Pope will do in liturgical matters. Perhaps Guido can persuade Francis to follow the example of Benedict and wear the Vestments and things that he did. Remember at first Benedict kept things simple like John Paul but starting in 2007 or 2008 he starting wearing more and more fancy Vestments that simply stated the Continuity with the Church's Tradition. As far as the LCWR I doubt that have open arms to them and as far as the SSPX they missed their chance back in January when they rejected his final offer to them to be part of a personal prelature.
As noted above regarding the replay issue. If I put my TV on a continuous replay would I be able to amass Plenary Indulgences ad infinitum?
Ahhh, the joys of technology. Imagine what the Reformation leaders would have said to Blogging or Twitter?
