Personhood Amendment is Like the Star Wars Missile Defense

Planned Parenthood in Colorado recently announced that they were closing two clinics. Why? Because Planned Parenthood is going broke fighting off these personhood amendments that pro-lifers in Colorado keep trying to get passed.

Here's the thing. I know pro-lifers are all sorts of split on whether we should push personhood or not. But Planned Parenthood knows that if they lose that battle it's game over so they go hog wild to defeat it. According to WND, Planned Parenthood outspent pro-lifers on that issue 10-1.

This reminds me of Ronald Reagan talking up the missile defense program that scared the bejeezus out of the USSR. So the Russians spent billions on more weapons and ended up going broke. Yes, to stave off annihilation they went broke and annihilated themselves. Good strategy.

So even though the personhood amendment never really had a chance of passing, the results of even picking the fight have been beneficial.

Let's make them keep fighting on every level. Keep fighting efforts to defund them. Keep fighting personhood amendments. Keep fighting in court. Making them fear losing money will make them spend money and go broke. Works for me.

The Strategic Defense Initiative, which only its enemies called Star Wars, was mostly technology that would work just fine, so that comparison doesn't really work. Also, Reagan offered to give it to the Soviets for free, in the pure humanitarian interest of not holding each other's civilian population hostage anymore (which is what a nuclear Cold War is).

The Soviets didn't accept it, even for free, because they knew that without the threat of their nukes, we might directly use military force to stop them, rather than proxy wars. That's also why Iran and North Korea are so concerned to have nukes, historically we've never interfered with a nuclear power, even when it murdered 60 million of its own people (as in China).

It was other areas of military spending where Reagan outspent the Soviets and made them destroy themselves to keep up; the SDI was a separate idea.

Every individual person who votes for a PERSONHOOD AMENDMENT is a person. Sovereign personhood is endowed with the human being's immortal soul at fertilization of the female egg by the male sperm. A new, legally and morally innocent and immortal person comes into being at fertilization. A PERSONHOOD AMENDMENT does acknowledge every human being as a sovereign person and make him feel a part of creation and the community. Every sovereign person constitutes the state (government) with his sovereignty from the very first instance of his existence. The sovereign person is and never can he be denied his existence and his act of free will to bring forth the sovereign people: "We, the people..." To deny the sovereignty of the person is to commit treason against a sovereign nation. The necessity of a PERSONHOOD AMENDMENT, now, is to prevent discrimination, denial of human rights and the tyranny of those who refuse to acknowledge another person's civil rights; a slip-slide into darkness and barbarianism.

The Soviets were actually broke well before SDI came along. They knew their defense spending was killing them. But foolish policies of detente - including Western trade and even LOANS to keep the former Soviet Union afloat - kept them in business longer. The Soviets, in the period 1945-1980, went on the longest, largest, peacetime expansion of conventional and strategic nuclear forces the world has ever seen. Well over half their economy was dedicated to defense.

What the Reagan buildup really did, was destroy the advantage in strategic and conventional forces the Soviets held during the 70s. Thanks to Nixon, Ford, Carter, and their policies of appeasement, by 1980, the Soviets possessed a huge advantage across the board in the balance of forces. They very likely could have invaded Western Europe, and won. But, Reagan, and the impeccably timed revolution in military affairs (low cost smart bombs, missiles, hyper-capable aircraft, etc), began steadily eating away at that advantage. SDI threatened to render the massive investment the Soviets had made in strategic nuclear forces neuter. By 1983, they simply had no more resources to compete in yet another area, "outbuild" SDI by flooding more resources into offensive nuclear forces, or even respond to the micro-electronics driven revolution in military affairs. They had no microelectronics industry, what tiny bit they had consisted of stolen commercial tech from the West.

The Soviet economy was imploding by 1985, when Gorbachev took over. The strategic decision to convince the Saudi's to flood the world market with oil, driving prices down to 1960s levels when adjusted for inflation, eliminated the only reliable source of hard currency the Soviets had (their oil exports were rendered much, much less valuable), played a huge role in this. So did Reagan's decision to sell the Soviets US grain, further depleting their hard currency reserves.

The point is, the end of the Cold War was not due to any one policy decision, or one breakthrough technology, but was the confluence of numerous efforts, directives, advances in technology, etc., that were all deliberately considered and advanced by the Reagan Administration to undermine, attack, and, they hoped, destroy the Soviet Union. By Providence, it worked, but the main thing that destroyed the Soviet Union was Reagan's determination that it be destroyed. He was the first American President to ever deliberately hold that as his prime policy objective, and that was the foremost achievement of his time in office.
