Advice Needed for Couple Seeking to Adopt

A friend of mine asked me if I knew of any good and reputable domestic Christian adoption agencies. I know nothing about it. This couple are good Christians and have tried unsuccessfully for years to have children. Now they're interested in adopting.

As I've always learned, CMR's readers tend to know a lot more than CMR writers about pretty much everything. So any thoughts or advice on this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

I'm not sure about Christian agencies, but adoption through the state is an option too and usually (or at least in Nevada), the state pays the parents a monthly stipend during the initial fostering stage until the adoption is complete. And then if the child adopted has disabilities, the state will pay additional stipends to assist the new parents with ongoing medical care. Perhaps they could consider going through the state for adoption. I have a good friend, a faithful Catholic, who has adopted 4 of her 7 children via the state, including one with severe disabilities. I've picked her brain on the topic and started the research process since we would like to adopt at some point. Her main advice about adoption (maybe you could pass this along to your friends), is that no matter how you grow your family (biologically or adoptively) you are going to go through some labor pains- both ways require hard work and patience! :)

tell EVERYBODY that you want to adopt- a baby might 'fall from the sky' (ie. a person who knows someone who knows someone...)- have a lawyer and a home study done- you might be surprised

Check with the local Catholic Charities, as most dioceses have an adoption agency. That's how we adopted our five...

If they aren't already part of an infertility support group in their area, I highly recommend this. Other couples in the group are invaluable resources for knowing which adoption agencies are good and which are not. We knew which agencies to check out and which to avoid from our support group. But that was awhile ago. The baby we adopted is a freshman at Xavier!

Holy Family Adoption Agency in St Paul, MN. http://www.holyfamilyadoption.org

Founders are members at my old parish, the famed St Agnes, and the agency's offices are actually in a parish building.
