Pro-Choice Republican Goes Down, Pro-Lifers Declare Victory

Last night, Republican congresswoman Renee Ellmers was beaten in the GOP Primary in North Carolina's 2nd district. This is a good thing for pro-lifers.

The Susan B. Anthony List worked very hard to ensure her defeat and a victory for Representative George Holding, a pro-life Republican.

Ellmers had called herself pro-life but when things got real, she bounced.

“Susan B. Anthony List exists to support and amplify pro-life women’s voices. Rep. Renee Ellmers was our ally until she led the charge to derail the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. That’s why we had to flex the political muscle of the pro-life movement,” said Marjorie Dannenfelser, SBA List president and a North Carolina native. “She has her own failed leadership to blame for this loss.”

The SBA List mounted a campaign to “Dump Ellmers” which included "a ground operation of five field staff and more than 200 canvassers who have been active in the state since 2014." They knocked on thousands and thousands of doors and reached thousands more through digital ads.

Throughout her career, Ellmers would say things like "I have gained the wisdom of knowing that every life is a precious gift from God and it is not for us to judge its worth, deny its beginning or determine its end." That sounds the part, right?

Remember in 2015, when we were all getting ready to attend the March for Life and Republicans were set to pass the Pain Capable Unborn Child Protection Act when all of a sudden it got pulled. I recall that everyone was talking about it at the time and pro-lifers were pretty deflated. We all saw it as YET ANOTHER example of the Republicans wimping out on the pro-life cause. Well, that was Renee Ellmers. She led the charge to derail the pro-life bill.

And it seems the SBA List didn't forget.

This is the kind of thing that pro-life groups must do. There must be a consequence to turning your back on pro-lifers.

Update: Interestingly, Ellmers was Donald Trump's first congressional endorsement. So...yeah. There's that too.
