Brian Walden - I've noticed your posts to be particular provocative and at times obtuse. I said very specifically, "black, Asian, Latin and pretty much every stripe of European ancestry." "Every stripe" of course including the Irish, since they are still part of Europe last I checked. All you have to do is see the names Mahoney, O'Malley and Law in the news to see the US bishops are indeed well-represented (saturated?) with men of Irish decent. Since it was so painfully obvious to everyone else, I really didn't feel the need to call that out in my post.

Early Riser, it's more than just black, Asian, and Latino. How many bishops are descendants of a European culture which was commonly discriminated against in our past (for example the Irish). But Political Correctnes has no room for culture; it just judges people by their skin color (as if that's any more important than eye color or hair color) - it's an incredibly racist philosophy.

Jonathan - The Roman Catholic church has already had 6 African popes. Granted, they were all before the 8th century, but at that point in time Africa was a hub of Western civilization (before the Mohammedan conquest cut it off from Europe).

I've never read the Politico. And I can't really find a reason to ever do so again. I don't know the percentages of ethnic breakdowns of all US bishops, but I do know first hand that they are comprised of people who's ethnic background is black, Asian, Latin and pretty much every stripe of European ancestry. Hardly an all-white country club, and very much a reflection of the ethnic background of the US itself. But I guess this wouldn't make the Politico's point any stronger.

This is not an aberration. This is the religion of Political Correctness in its purest form. Everyone is ranked on a scale based on their sex and skin color. White men are spawns of hell while black women are walking saints - everyone else falls somewhere in between. The intent of one's actions and the means used to accomplish them are meaningless. That's why Politico doesn't need to provide any evidence other than the fact that the bishops are old white men and the politicians they oppose aren't.

good grief! I read past the first 2 sentences, and came away thinking, again, "WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE (congress)." Do they really think the crisis of health care is that poor (and not-so-poor) women can't get policies that cover abortion???? This is making me crazy. So much momentum and energy is being wasted here. What was a real opprtunity to improve the lives of millions with true, sustainable, life-giving, reform is being squandered by those who think abortions should be covered more than elective cosmetic surgery. For heaven's sake, there are women who can't get reconstructive surgeries after mastectomies covered. And they insist that there is no reform without free abortions? I'm disgusted with these "leaders". Disgusted.
