McCain Speaks, Get Your Decoder Ring Out

Senator John McCain is talking to you. What? You can't hear him. Listen harder. Nothing? Oh wait, you're not wearing your decoder ring.

McCain is talking almost incessantly the last week about abortion and freedom of religion. The media's not helping because they're consumed with declaring Barack Obama the Democratic nominee. But McCain has been trying to speak to religious pro-lifers but like I said, it's in code. You'll hear two words coming out of McCain's mouth quite often: "Roberts and Alito."

He's vowing to appoint conservative judges like Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. and Justice Samuel Alito. "I will look for accomplished men and women with a proven record of excellence in the law, and a proven commitment to judicial restraint," he said.

That's as close to red meat that McCain gets.

McCain focuses on Roberts and Alito because they are the hope of conservatives for turning over Roe V. Wade. He stays away from mentioning Justices Antonin Scalia and Clarence Thomas because let's face it -for one Thomas has political baggage. But also Scalia has been on the bench for twenty two years. There's bound to be a case or two that can be used to pummel McCain on if he is out there mentioning Scalia all the time.

Ironically, McCain is talking about nominating justices like Roberts and Alito who found many tenets of his own campaign finance reform law unconstitutional. But I digress...and so does he because he knows that much of the conservative base which still doesn't trust him may, in the end, vote for him because of one issue, the issue which goes unspoken -ABORTION.

That's what so much of this campaign is going to come down to. Liberal New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof knows it. He wrote today of the fear of Hillary voters not voting for Obama in the general election, "It’s true that most of Senator Clinton’s supporters presumably will flinch if they contemplate a McCain Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade.

Conservative columnist Thomas Sowell said something similar but from the opposite side. Sowell said John McCain could never convince him to vote for McCain. Only one man could do that. That man's name is Barack Obama.

Make no mistake, the future direction of the Supreme Court is very much at stake in this November’s presidential election. The two or three justices most likely to depart the Court over the next four years — Justice Stevens, Justice Ginsburg, and possibly Justice Souter — are liberal judicial activists. If a President Obama names their successors Roe will likely be preserved for at least another generation.

And McCain is saying everything he can to keep your eye on that fact. In fact, take a look at his home page at JohnMcCain.com. The site looks more like it belongs to conservative stalwart and culture warrior Sen. Sam Brownback than the John McCain we've come to know and...be wary of. The headline of the site is McCain looking off inspiringly into the distance and next to him it say "Defending Freedom and Dignity." The dignity part is his attempt at code for abortion and euthanasia.

Now here's the best part. Under it he has a quote from William Wilberforce which says, "When we think of eternity and of the future consequences of all human conduct what is there in this life that should make any man contradict the dictates of his conscience, the principles of justice, the laws of religion and God."

Pro-lifers often (and fairly) compare abortion to slavery as both denied human dignity to certain members. That's why Wilberforce is there.

Notice that McCain is talking to us now while the media is consumed with the Democratic nomination process. See, McCain knows that to win in this desperate time for Republicans which include an unpopular war and a shaky economy, he must appeal to moderates, independents and Democrats. He doesn't believe he can make a play for New Jersey, Pennsylvania or Michigan if he's talking about abortion in plainspeak. McCain wants to appeal to moderates while intimating his conservative credentials. He's saying many of the right things. Can you hear him? Do you want to?

Mennonites For Obama?

Goshen College student, Emily Miller shows off her support for her candidate for president on the door of her dorm room. (Antonio Perez, Chicago Tribune / April 29, 2008)I am not sure if it will help him much, but Barack Obama seems to have locked up the college-aged Mennonite vote. At Goshen College, a Mennonite institution, a recent poll among the students shows that the messiah of death leads among the students.

[Chicago Tribune]The political fervor on campus coalesces around Obama. A campus poll of students and faculty found the Illinois senator was their first choice, McCain was second and Clinton third. But before drawing conclusions from that poll, be aware that these students bring a different point of view to the political arena. They aren't much interested in all the campaign spinning over who said what. For instance, flaps over Rev. Jeremiah Wright Jr. or accounts of sniper fire in Bosnia may have played in headlines across the nation day after day, but they are barely mentioned here. If pressed on those things, students say they have no interest in the backbiting but focus instead on the big issues that influence their lives and religion.
I suppose that these youngins' have yet to realize that Obama has no respect for religion or its ideals. Just ask the babies who survive an abortion. Oh yeah, you can't. So you might ask yourself, why would our buggy driving brethren support Obama?
"Mennonites aren't nationalistic," said Thomas, who also is editor of the church's magazine, The Mennonite. "They see themselves as global citizens. They are patriotic but view patriotism through the lens of What can we do that benefits the world?"
Obama views patriotism through a lens of how does it benefit Obama. Remember how he used to refuse to wear a flag pin? When times got rough he changed his tune about flags.

Anyway, my message to the Mennonites, (do they read blogs?) if you want to do something that benefits the world, you can start by not voting for Obama.

Obama Shows Saintly Patience

Showing nearly eternal patience, Democrat Barack Obama after twenty years of biting his tongue finally said he was outraged and saddened by the comments of his former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright.

Obama regretfully said,

"I am outraged by the comments that were made and saddened by the spectacle that we saw yesterday...The person I saw yesterday was not the person that I met 20 years ago...But when he states and then amplifies such ridiculous propositions as the U.S. government somehow being involved in AIDS. ... There are no excuses. They offended me. They rightly offend all Americans and they should be denounced."

“What became clear to me was that he was presenting a worldview that contradicts who I am and what I stand for...And the fact that Rev. Wright would somehow think it is appropriate to command the stage for three or four days in the midst of this major debate it not only makes me angry but it saddens me.”

“I want to make it absolutely clear that I do not subscribe to the views that he expressed...I do not expect those views to be attributed to me...I don’t think anyone could attribute those ideas to me.”

Many experts think Obama's twenty years of silence reflect his Job-like patience. (Not that he knows who Job is) And it is this patience, according to voters across the country, which would make him one of the greatest Presidents the country has ever seen.

Said one anonymous voter: "Do you know how many politicians would just immediately get angry if their pastor said G%#Damn America? They'd probably get up and walk right out of that church. But not Barack Obama. He listened to it for twenty years before finally losing his patience. He's amazing."

It is this same kind of patience that Obama seems willing to extend to terrorist countries like Iran by sitting down and talking with them despite their constant threats of marching Jews into the sea or attacking America.

One Democratic consultant said he felt bad for Obama because of this experience. "That poor man was obviously in pain listening to Rev. Wright for all those years and he never said a word," he said. "He's my hero."

Wright's incendiary comments have dogged Obama's presidential campaign and he still waited almost two months before rejecting his former pastor.

But some recalcitrant obnoxious right wing Christian conservatives like Patrick Archbold of CMR continue to attack Obama, even after this display of saintly patience. "Hey look, originally Obama said that he could no more disown Rev. Wright than he could the black community or his white grandmother. As he is now disowning Rev. Wright, I would like to put out an Amber alert for Obama's grandmother. She probably shouldn't be expecting a Christmas Card this year."

Obama's Got a Running Mate

Barack Obama has a running mate -whether he wants one or not.

The Rev. Jeremiah Wright was thrown into the bright white hot lights of the national spotlight last month and discovered something. He liked it.

And that is very bad news for Obama.

The Wright controversy exploded into our consciousness last month with incriminating quotes about that anyone with a television set or a radio have memorized by now.

And then Obama gave a speech about race and everything was said to be hunky-dory. Then Obama lost Texas and Ohio. But even the the Wright thing was believed to be fading into the rearview mirror. Then Obama lost Pennsylvania.

Commercials began airing about Wright's comments in North Carolina and McCain denounced them as racist which made the national media focus on it even more.

And now the talk has started. Hey, Obama hasn't won in a while. Can he close the deal? In fact, Obama hasn't won anything since the Rev. Wright scandal started.

And now the Rev. Wright is back and feeling wronged. He's got something to say. A PBS interview. A nationally televised speech at the NAACP.

And now, this: The Rev. Jeremiah Wright said Monday that he will try to change national policy by “coming after” Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) if he is elected president. That means Obama and Wright are a package deal.

Like I said. Bad news. Obama and Wright will not be seeing much of each other over the next few months but they'll be seen together by anyone and everyone with a television set or a radio.

I Like What Obama Says about America

I'll admit it. I have a soft spot for Barack Obama because I like what his candidacy says about our great country.

Now, I live in a small town in Pennsylvania so people out here were talking often and vehemently about his recent comments. And I spoke with a few people who said there's no way they'd ever vote for Obama after that. It had me thinking, "Hey, how great is America?" I mean it. I know Barack Obama wouldn't agree. He doesn't seem to much like America. He believes we need a transformation, a new kind of politics, a new way of looking at problems, a new this and a new that.

But I can't help but think about how far we've come in just one generation. Just 50 years ago there was a real discussion in our country over whether African Americans deserved civil rights. And there was a struggle and there was violence and it was awful. And the right side won.

But now just 50 years later there is an African American running for President and many many people I know are rejecting him, not because he's black. But because he's a snob. He's an ivy league elitist who looks down on regular folks who "cling to their guns and their religion."

And many Americans don't like him not because he's for civil rights but because on the great civil rights struggle of our time for the unborn, Obama is on the wrong side.

If you ask me America should get points for that. This is something the media will never point out but I think it shows real advancement towards a color blind society. Kudos to America. We dislike Obama for the right reasons.

One of the other reasons I worry about Obama is he seems to have very big ideas. Not necessarily grounded in reality but big ideas nonetheless. There was something always reliably small about Bill Clinton. He wanted to be liked too much to do anything permanently damaging to the country. Obama's different. He really wants to change America into something else...something European? I get the sense from him that because he looks down on middle America he doesn't trust us to handle our own affairs. We're not capable like an Ivy League lawyer/politician is capable. There's something anti-American about Obama's view of America. There's something anti-American about Obama. And that's why many people won't vote for him. So yeah a lot of us aren't going to vote for Obama and the country can hold its head high because it's for the right reasons.

Obama Supports Gay Marriage

In an interview with The Advocate Barack Obama really sent up a flare to the country as to how dangerous his Presidency would actually be:

Obama: And finally, an area that I’m very interested in is making sure that federal benefits are available to same-sex couples who have a civil union. I think as more states sign civil union bills into law the federal government should be helping to usher in a time when there’s full equality in terms of what that means for federal benefits.

Interviewer: I assume you’re talking about the Defense of Marriage Act.

Obama: Absolutely, and I for a very long time have been interested in repeal of DOMA.
WHAT! Helloooooo! I'm calling the Republican Party. This is what your ads should be about. Many people on the right are not very excited about McCain but they will certainly be scared of Obama after this.

Now, just a refresher, DOMA was passed by Congress by a vote of 85-14 in the Senate and a vote of 342-67 in the House of Representatives and was signed by President Bill Clinton on September 21, 1996. (Notice only 14 Senators voted against it. That's usually a sign it's pretty out there)

DOMA stipulated that No state need treat a relationship between persons of the same sex as a marriage, even if the relationship is considered a marriage in another state. The Federal Government may not treat same-sex relationships as marriages for any purpose, even if concluded or recognized by one of the states.

Now, the moment that Obama were to repeal DOMA gay marriage would by law forcibly accepted in every state of the union because some states have already passed a gay marriage bill.

The repeal of DOMA is a huge third rail. Even Hillary who has vociferously courted the gay vote, even sending her daughter on gay bar crawls throughout the country, has not gone this far. Hillary said she would look into it and she gave lip service to equal rights but nothing like this.

The funny thing is that even for Obama this is a sudden turnaround. Obama in 2006 said on the Senate floor, "Personally, I do believe that marriage is between a man and a woman." But now because Obama is feeling the heat from Hillary he's courting votes by tacking left. Really left. This is a very big deal and another sign that Obama is not ready for prime time and would be ruinous to our country.

Alaska Governor (And Possible Veep) Punished by Baby

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who is rumored to be on Sen. John McCain's short list for the Vice Presidency, gave birth to her fifth child at 6:30 this morning, according to the Anchorage Daily News.

The boy's name is Trig Paxson Van Palin. He's 6 pounds, 2 ounces.

A spokesperson said the governor and her son are healthy and resting comfortably today. The baby wasn't due until May 18. "It was quite a surprise," a spokesperson said.

The Palin family issued a statement that read: "Trig is beautiful and already adored by us. We knew through early testing he would face special challenges, and we feel privileged that God would entrust us with this gift and allow us unspeakable joy as he entered our lives.

"We have faith that every baby is created for good purpose and has potential to make this world a better place. We are truly blessed."

Asked what special challenges the family was referring to, the spokesperson said, "It's a family matter, and that information should come from the governor herself."

Now I wonder if Barack Obama will call the governor and express his condolences for her being punished by a baby.

But just look at the two sides of this question. Obama's "punished with a baby" comments and Sarah Palin who knew she was having a special needs child and didn't see it as a punishment but a blessing. When you think of how many of the children with special needs are aborted today, it's shocking and saddening. But it's the logical end to the secular Darwinist philosophy.

Anyway, congrats to the Alaska Governor and her family. God bless and I hope to see you on stage at the Republican National Convention.

Dems Talk Potential Life

Newsweek's Jon Meacham, who co-hosted the weirdly titled "Compassion Forum" with CNN's Campbell Brown, wasted little time before asking both candidates whether they believe life begins at conception. He should be applauded for asking the question even though the candidates danced around like long tailed cats in a room full of rocking chairs.

The candidates know that this is one question they cannot answer so they parry.

Here's Hillary's response:

"I believe that the potential for life begins at conception...But for me, it is also not only about a potential life.... And, therefore, I have concluded, after great, you know, concern and searching my own mind and heart over many years, that our task should be, in this pluralistic, diverse life of ours in this nation, that individuals must be entrusted to make this profound decision.... I think abortion should remain legal."
Ok? Where's the answer? What does "potential for life begins at conception" even mean?

You know, sometimes I wonder if candidates who support abortion just haven't really thought it all through. But an answer like this really shows that not only have they thought it through but they've thought up a clever obfuscation to get out of it. There's no denying that life begins at conception. Scientifically that's obviously true. Now it's just a matter of whether it's life you want to protect or not.

If you thought Hillary's response was poor wait until you hear Obama's response:
"This is something that I have not, I think, come to a firm resolution on. I think it's very hard to know what that means, when life begins. Is it when a cell separates? Is it when the soul stirs? So, I don't presume to know the answer to that question. What I know, as I've said before, is that there is something extraordinarily powerful about potential life and that has a moral weight to it that we take into consideration when we're having these debates."
Now, he absolutely said nothing. Firstly, he's going to this forum in his limousine, was there no consultant, aide, campaign worker who didn't see this question coming? How could his response be worse? "This is something that I have not, I think, come to a firm resolution on. I think it's very hard to know what that means, when life begins." But I have no problem stamping out that life even though I'm not firmly resolved on what it is. It's so cavalier about the issue that it's sickening.

It is these responses which make me believe that in the end we will gain major victories in the fight against abortion. Because they don't really believe in what they're saying. When politics meets morality, morality will win...eventually.

Obama Looks Down his Nose at You

Peggy Noonan said recently that she thought Obama might be a snob. Well, read how he talks about people from small towns, according to the Politico and then you tell me:

You go into these small towns in Pennsylvania and, like a lot of small towns in the Midwest, the jobs have been gone now for 25 years and nothing's replaced them...And they fell through the Clinton Administration, and the Bush Administration, and each successive administration has said that somehow these communities are gonna regenerate and they have not.

And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations.
Notice how he just throws in guns, religion and anti-immigrant sentiment. All things he doesn't seem very fond of.

This is a quote you will be seeing a lot of in months to come. And I think it is quite informative as to how he thinks of Americans in general.

Shocker! Fr. Andrew Greeley in the Obama Camp

I know it will come as a big surprise so please sit down. Fr. Andrew Greeley is in the Obama camp. Greeley writes glowingly of Senator Obama in the SunTimes. Although Fr. Greeley cannot look at the Church but to see fault after fault, apparently when he looks at Obama, he sees nothing but halo.

When Chicagoans who know Sen. Obama read the columns about him turned out by the national punditocracy, we tend to gasp and shake our heads in bemusement. He has become an ink blot for sick minds, very clever sick minds. Call up realclearpolitics.com and see what I mean. My favorite recent outbursts of hate come from Thomas Sowell, an African-American conservative economist, and from Naomi Schaefer Riley, the "assistant taste editor" of the Wall Street Journal (which title may be an oxymoron). Both write about
Greeley, is so vociferous in his defense one could be forgiven if the thought that Sowell and and Schaefer had insulted Greeley's momma. Defending Obama against Sowell's charges that Obama was a radical when he left Harvard and that is why he joined Trinity Church, Greeley writes:

Professor Sowell asserts that Barack Obama had to abandon his radical stance when he became a national public figure; he had to "project an entirely different persona, that of a post-racial leader who can heal divisiveness and bring us all together. The ease with which he has accomplished his chameleonlike change is a tribute to the man's talent and a warning about his reliability."

Anyone who knows anything about Obama's activity as a community organizer in Chicago, even before he joined Trinity knows his style was always one of bringing people together in consensus.
Bringing people together in consensus? Would that include the babies that were left to die after failed abortions? Are they part of the consensus? Would this consensus also include the vast majority of the citizens of Illinois who supported the Born alive Infant Protection Act and rightfully abhor the infanticide practiced at Illinois' hospitals? Apparently not since Obama fought against these most basic rights for babies. So much for consensus. Greeley finsihes with this ode to the Obamessiah.
Neither columnist is capable of delivering a precinct, no matter how skillful their fiction. However, their venom indicates that both are offended by this attractive, charismatic and intelligent young man. The last American politician who was the subject of such animus was JFK.
I would suggest that Greeley ought to be ashamed of himself for being an Obama shill, but that would be pointless.

Obama: Babies and STD's Are Punishments

Off the Politico.com I read how Obama was confronted by a pro-lifer in Pennsylvania recently. Obama, of course gave the usual tripe about how good people can disagree on the issue and how we are all for adoptions and all that.

But then he went one step further by saying:

"Look, I got two daughters — 9 years old and 6 years old," he said. "I am going to teach them first about values and morals, but if they make a mistake, I don't want them punished with a baby. I don't want them punished with an STD at age 16, so it doesn't make sense to not give them information."
The first thing that so astonishing to me is the equivalence between an STD and a baby. And then the comment that they'd be "Punished with a baby." Where does the support for adoption come in then?

This man might be President. I feel nothing but horror and shame.

Didn't He Say No to a Flag Pin?

Remember, Obama bravely refused to wear a flag pin and the media hailed him as a hero. The Illinois senator explained months ago that he no longer wears such a pin, at least in part, because of the Iraq War.

"You know, the truth is that right after 9/11, I had a pin," Obama said. "Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we're talking about the Iraq War, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security, I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest.

But insert trouble into the campaign and the flags come out of storage. This is Obama during his "race speech."

My hero.

H/T The Daily Danet

At Villanova, Politics Trump Morality

Here's the quote that jumped out at me in this piece by the Catholic Standard and Times concerning Michelle Obama's visit to Villanova University:

Casey Dolan, a senior at Villanova and a volunteer at the rally, encouraged the protesters in their freedom of speech, but said she believed that “Villanova’s role as an academic institution should trump its role as a Catholic university.”

“I know our mission is based in the Augustinian tradition and Catholicism, but I would think, in this case, if Villanova has the opportunity to bring the community together, rally around the concept of politics and the presidential election, that should trump any pro-choice, pro gay-marriage or any other stance that Mr. and Mrs. Obama have,” she said.

What she means is that their presence should trump any issues she doesn't particularly care about. Or she knows that the school has a Catholic history but she's here now and everyone she knows agrees that we're not so into that whole Catholic thing so we'll put up a plaque or something but...it's history.

Obama spoke to nearly 2,500 students and community members at the Jake Nevin field house. There was no opportunity for questions and answers afterwards. Of course not. You wouldn't want Michelle Obama saying things she believes like she's not proud of her country or something like that.

Of course, the university disavows any responsibility by saying that although the rally was organized by a registered student association calling itself “Villanova Students for Barack Obama,” according to school officials the university was in no way sponsoring or endorsing the candidate.

The Catholic university granted permission to the group because “the student engagement in the political process and the presidential election is a very positive educational learning experience for the students,” said Kathleen Byrnes, associate vice president for student life. “Because the engagement in the political process is an important part in a young adult’s development, we allow student groups to bring presidential candidates to campus. We would welcome any presidential candidate that a student group wants to bring.”

How about the nominee of the Nazi party? No? She must mean political people that are cool.

The decidedly uncool members of Generation Life, based in Oreland, were among the first to speak out against the Obama rally on campus. Judi McLane, director of Generation Life, said the organization did not oppose students becoming politically engaged, but rather, it opposed bringing to a Catholic campus Obama, who supports abortion on demand and partial birth abortions. As a state legislator he voted against an Illinois bill that would have protected infants who survive botched late-term abortions. [On the federal level, the Born Alive Infant Protection Act was signed into law in 2002.].

“Let’s say that there was a candidate who supported slavery — would you allow him to come on your campus as a way of promoting student involvement in the political arena?” McLane asked. “We have been so brainwashed into thinking that abortion is a political issue when it is a human rights issue. You would never allow someone on campus who supported killing Jewish people or supported killing African-Americans. It is so absurd. The killing of the unborn is the most important social ‘unjust’ issue that we have today.”

Amen to that. This is just a case of the people in the school and the people who run the school want to be cool. And among academic types, Obama is cool. The uncool people are the ones who have the indecency of pointing out that Obama favors baby killing.

So here you have a senior who says that the university's academic role surpasses its role as a religious institution? Well I agree. It has. Villanova has clearly shunned its Catholicism in favor of being cool.

Newsweek Has Obamamania

In giving out up and down arrows for the week, Newsweek has proven itself once again to be suffering from an acute case of Obamamania.

Sean Hannity along with Rush receive a down arrow for using "race-baiting to score ratings. Now that's hating America." I would assume that's for them playing Rev. Jeremiah Wright's speeches. Now, of course, Newsweek doesn't quote any race-baiting comments but just trust them on this one.

And then somehow after suffering one of the most impressive political implosions in recent memory Barack Obama merits only a sideways arrow with this message: "Will the greatest speech in recent history get him sidelined as a "black candidate"?

I'm sorry? The greatest speech in recent history? How recent? Like in the past week? I think Newsweek may have a Obamamania problem. Someone call for help.

Oh and get this, Jeremiah Wright gets a down arrow. Guess for what? Nope. Not for hate speech. Here's what Newsweek said, "Why keep preaching inflammatory sermons with candidate Barack in the pews? Dumb."

So it's not Barack's fault for sitting there and not standing up for his country or for sanity for that matter but it's dumb of Rev. Wright to preach that way because Barack was in the crowd.

Wait. They called Rev. Wright dumb? Isn't that racist?

If Bill Richardson is Judas, Then Hillary is Who?

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson in his latest chapter of "Please pick me as Vice President" endorsed Barack Obama yesterday.

Clinton enabler James Carville called it "An act of betrayal."

You have to love this quote given on Good Friday. I love it when politicians use Christ to make a political point. He said:

"[Bill] Richardson's endorsement came right around the anniversary of the day when Judas sold out for 30 pieces of silver, so I think the timing is appropriate, if ironic."

Never mind the fact that Carville has no more clue than Alanis Morrisette what the word "ironic" means, but think of the audacity to use Christ's name to make a scheming political attack.

Razzle Dazzle

My musical video commentary on Barack Obama's speech on race.

Obama gives them the ol' razzle dazzle...

Don't worry, it's only two minutes.

More Mad World of Barack Obama

A few weeks back I put together a video call "Mad World of Barack Obama" about Obama's fight against the Born Alive Infants Protection Act. This video on you tube (all versions) currently has had almost 7,000 views in the last 2 weeks.

Since that time I had the honor of working with Jill Stanek, the whistle blowing nurse who is largely responsible for bringing this horrific practice to light and leading the fight for this important legislation. If you don't know her compelling story, you can get the 10,000 foot version in her online bio.

So, in conjunction with Jill Stanek, I have made a slightly tweaked version of the video that focuses a little more directly on the infanticide supported by Obama. My thanks to Jill. If you are interested, you can see the tweaked version here. Please note that the video contains one brief disturbing image.
