Devil Worship Promoted at the Front Lines of the LA Cathedral

I was able to visit the Los Angeles Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels yesterday. More will be said on its architecture in a later post. However, I did visit the gift shop, which has many nice Catholic books and other things. The problem came when I began talking with a man who worked there. His customer service couldn't have been better. His shiny jewelry and over-the-top attitude was a bit off-putting, but it was California, after all. My friend was looking for a rosary for his girlfriend, and the store worker started asking him about her favorite colors, what kind of clothes she wore, what sort of textures she liked, etc., in order to help him pick a rosary that best agreed with her fashion sense. So far, very Californian, but not a big problem. Kind of HGTV: Rosary Edition.

Then he asked what I did for a living and I told him that I teach architecture and theology, and he said with a casual smile: "oh, that's great, my partner would love that. He was a monk for 4 years." Again, this was California, and maybe even the cathedral shop has legal issues about who it can hire and who it can't. Then I started talking to my friend about one of the architects who was a finalist for the cathedral design a few years back, whose architectural philosophy is radically anti-Incarnational and anti-Catholic, and the salesman said "well, everyone is welcome in this cathedral." Being cheeky, I said "how about Satanists?" He responded: "Satanists aren't devil worshipers, you know. I know some Satanists and they aren't devil worshipers." So, following up, I said: "OK, then what about devil worshipers? Are they welcome here at the cathedral?" He replied: "Well, devil worshipers are actually Christians, because God made the devil." Another woman in line chimed in with a smile: "that's right, God made the devil." I decided it was best to leave at that point.

Honestly, I couldn't have made this up. A staff member of the cathedral gift shop might be the first and only person a visitor might talk to who represents the cathedral, as it was in my case. And what do we get? A person who gladly flaunts his open defiance of the Church's moral teaching and has a positive view of devil worship.

Who's asleep at the wheel here?

Comments

  1. It seems that the answer to the oh-too-easy-to-answer question at the end of this goes like this: Cardinal Mahony names the cathedral rector, the cathedral rector oversees someone who does the hiring at the gift shop. But ultimately the buck stops with the cardinal.

    ReplyDelete
  2. Cardinal Mahony is digging his own grave. St. John Chrysostom was right, the road to hell is paved with the skulls of heretical bishops (or something along those lines).

  3. As a convert (24 years and counting), I am constantly amazed at the bunk that cradle Catholics buy into. A whole generation is so poorly formed in the Faith that it is no wonder that Catholics are so easily preyed upon by militant protestant sects and goofy new age false prophets. A little Catholic triumphalism could help push back the wolves at the gate.

  4. He was probably hired exactly because he openly defies the Church's moral teaching and finds nothing wrong with devil worshipers. To these liberal, so-called Catholics, inclusivity is the god they worship. Well, as long as all those traditionalists are left out.

  5. Mac, I think you made this story up. Nice try.

What you say about cradle Catholics also explains how so many ignorant converts are able to make a living as apologists.

  9. David,

Unfortunately, having lived in LA and been down to the Cathedral, this doesn't sound that far off to me...

    ReplyDelete
  10. I was just kidding, Mac. I don't REALLY think you made this story up. Then again, I don't think I have to go to California to get an earful of such drivel. I can find a few cities in the Midwest where this sort of thing is the norm.

  11. That is one spectacularly ugly building--symbolic, I suppose, of the kind of ugliness that's apparently going on inside the gift shop.

  12. After "Well, devil worshipers are actually Christians, because God made the devil", I would have been tempted to say

"Well, I worship President George Bush. God made him, so does that make me a Christian, too?!"

I get the feeling you might have found a loophole in the "everyone is welcome in this cathedral" rule at that point.

    ReplyDelete
  13. O Lord, deliver us from thy so-called followers, for they know thee not.

...I did get a good laugh when reading about them though.

"Satanists aren't devil worshipers, you know. I know some Satanists and they aren't devil worshipers."

"Well, devil worshipers are actually Christians, because God made the devil."

"That's right, God made the devil."

    These are simply classic.

    ReplyDelete
  14. "That's right, God made the devil."

Well, He did. But angels were given free will, and Lucifer (the "Angel of Light") turned against God. We all knew that, right? Still, we are so shocked initially by such nonsense that we lose our ability to reply effectively. "Okay, so are you saying that Satan is NOT the devil, is that it?" Then they'll look stupid, which is always great sport.

Yep, speaking the Truth in Love, kids, that's me.

  16. In my opinion, LA residents have more patience than some of us Chicago mind-your-own-business types. I would have walked (and never returned) as soon as I heard

“oh, that's great, my partner would love that.”

I am a customer that doesn’t care about “his partner.” For this “salesperson” to think I do care about “his partner” is presumptive and offensive. Yet, it’s typical of the in your face behavior exhibited from some of these types who have infiltrated the Catholic Church at every level.

    ReplyDelete
  17. It's quite interesting that this cathedral and Cardinal Mahony are in "full communion" with Rome, yet the Society of St Pius X is not (well, supposedly). Gee, I wonder which group is more Catholic?

Strange times we live in. Archbishop Lefebvre, pray for us!

  18. Having lived in L.A. for three decades, I will gladly provide edification:

    Cardinal Mahony IS the devil.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It is a very routine practice in California, especially the San Jose area for priests, seminarian students and other religious men to live with a male "partner". Many of the clergy openly participate in the gay culture of that area. Cardinal Mahoney is aware of this and actually indirectly encourages this. There really needs to be an exposé of some kind on Cardinal Mahoney. I realize he has done a lot of wonderful things in the realm of liturgy i.e. We Gather togther faithfully etc... but he is reluctant to teach the morals of the Catholic Church. Perhaps he finds many of the Church's teachings problematic.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I have also lived in CA. for over 30 years and His Eminence has many powerful friends which are aligned with the "dark side" and it shows by his actions and decisions.
The "Devil" was NOT made by God...God made Lucifer who turned into the Devil by his own rebellion. Just the same as a person with freewill BECOMES a HOMOSEXUAL, or murderer or adulturer...God did not make the homosexual God made the PERSON who chose to become the homosexual...
    (Just a clarification)

Attacking the Cardinal or any person in consecated life - either in word or deed - is sacriledge and a mortal sin requiring the Sacrament of Confession and absolution prior to receiving Communion. Catholics - brush up on the teachings of your Faith.

  23. LAC,
    Define attacking.

Is it attacking to point out facts? No. Is it attacking to ask "who is asleep at the wheel?" No.

Is it "Christian" to anonymously accuse others of mortal sin. I would say no.

  26. WE KNOW WHO THE SATANISTS ARE:

Cardinal Mahony’s Cathedral Guards Remove and Threaten Pro-life Youth During Honours for Pro-abort Mayor

LOS ANGELES, July 5, 2005 (LifeSiteNews.com) - Faithful Catholics were outraged last week, when a group of young pro-life Catholics were removed and threatened with arrest at the Los Angeles Cathedral where notoriously liberal Roger Cardinal Mahony was “celebrating” a pro-abortion politician.

On July 1, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles was holding inauguration ceremonies for Antonio Villaraigosa, mayor-elect of Los Angeles, who is pro-abortion and yet claims to be Catholic. A group of about a dozen young adult Catholics attempted to gain entry to the Cathedral and were stopped and threatened by cathedral security guards.

  27. I might agree with one thing LAC referred to: Calling Cardinal Mahony “the devil” might be beyond any man’s scope or authority. Perhaps that is what is meant by “judge not lest ye be judged?”

Having said that, I mostly applaud vocal Catholic faithful taking a public stance against what appears to very much be sacrilegious attitudes and sinful allowances. Do we not all know what is really at stake with our time spent here on earth? It is eternal life and eternal death. No suffering or unfairness compares to the rewards or punishments to come. I, for one, live in constant sadness for the world, and fear for us all. With the Catholic Church in America in particular, these overt affronts to faith and moral teachings of the Church are shocking, yet part and parcel as to how soft most of the Catholic body has become. Our children are ignorant of God and truth, the parents are materialistic, selfish and uncaring. Many priests I do not know how they have become so milque toast in their sermons avoiding any direct talk on sin, lust, selfishness, complacency, dying, heaven, hell and purgatory. We are ignorant and we think we’re all so good. What a sad embarrassment!

Every Catholic, every Christian, has a moral obligation to witness to all people as the moments dictate. We have a greater obligation to inwardly challenge our own sins and shortcomings. That is the tougher obligation where most fail greater. Hence, I have learned to be a little more forgiving with the sins of others, in general. Either they know not what they do or they cannot overcome something even if they know it to be wrong. Then again, there are others who simply do not care.

California Catholic Daily has a report on "homoerotic art featured at auction held Saturday at Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral to benefit AIDS clinics in Mexico".

Here's the story: “Friends and Lovers”

Here's a sample from the article:

The AIDS Healthcare Foundation held an art exhibition and auction last night at the conference center of Our Lady of the Angels Cathedral in Los Angeles to raise money for clinics it sponsors in Tijuana and Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
A California Catholic Daily reader who saw a preview of the event on a Los Angeles television program alerted the newsaper via email regarding the event. "They showed some of the items, and it was really gross -- men hugging, tops bared, nude males back scenes," said the reader in the email.

  29. I think the People of God have been asleep tooooo long. In The Gospel of Matthew Jesus tells us the the gates of Hell shall not prevail against the Kingdom of Heaven. Now, too often we just gloss over that comment. But if you really understand what Jesus meant we see that, WE the People of God, WE who are part of HIS KINGDOM, WE the CHURCH MILITANT need to be on the OFFENSIVE. But we have been on the Defensive since the Protestant Heresy or Reformation as some refer to it. We are called to be Soldiers for Christ, that means we need to confront and expose the Devil wherever he hides and that can mean, in Politics, in the Courtroom, in our own homes and too often we find that he is within our own Church. So, we are not called merely to defend what belongs to God but also to GAIN what the Devil has already taken from God, namely SOULS. That is what the "Church Militant" is all about.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I will offer a Chaplet of Divine Mercy for that young man. Yes, we need to proclaim the truth. But we also need to pray for those who are confused. St. Dominic placed the rosary on the side of the habit where soldiers used to keep their swords... so we fight with love and prayer.

    ReplyDelete
  31. "We fight with love and prayer" YES! This is what we begin with and it is always our sustenance BUT we must do more...remember the Epistle of St. James, he says, what good is it when a man comes to you and says he is cold and hungry and you say, be fed and warmed...the man goes away cold and hungry...unless your GIVE him a coat and food! Faith without works is dead my friend. We are to be DOERS of the Word. With all due respect to those who are sick in some way and are physically limited or are called to be hermits or to live in a cloister.
Look at the parables of Jesus they ALL call us to action...WOW, what a revelation! We can't get away with..."we'll pray about it" and leave it at that, anymore. That time is over. God is calling you and me to stand and fight.
    Peace.

  32. As Christians, we need to point out evil where evil exits and call people to repentance with charity and patience. Ultimately, the Holy Spirit convicts the sinner of his/her sins. At the same time, if we focus too much attention on looking for Satan and his evil deeds, our attention is taken off the Lord and His works. The grace of God is much greater than any work of Satan, who was defeated 2,000 years ago through the Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ. Thus, we can believe, that the gates of hell shall never prevail against His Church.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Our attention is only taken off the Lord if we begin with a different premise than the Lord. When we act to foil the wiles of the devil we are not taking our eyes off of the Lord, we are doing His will. You are right by sayng the ultimately he was defeated 2000 years ago with our Lord's death and Resurrection BUT our part still needs to be played out. That is why Revelation Ch. 12 v 11 says "...they conquered him by the Blood of The Lamb AND the word of their testimony..." It is not only the the Sacrifice of Jesus that defeats Satan...surprised? Too many Catholics and Protestants choose to see the easy way and try to justify it by Christ's Sacrifice. As proof look at the lives of the saints, they were proactive in their faith based on the confidence that their ACTIONS were in conformity AND in cooperation with the sacrifice of Christ...NOT apart from it. They went after the Devil and he feared them. Do you think the Devil fears most of the Christians today...I think not, why, because we are too complacent with our faith thinking that we've got it made because Jesus did the work for us....not so, that is the great deception of our time. Read Colossians ch.1.
    Peace.

  35. True that God created Lucifer, but in the beginning he was "good" with many gifts. Then, Lucifer,of his own free will, CHOSE to become evil, because of his prideful desire to be like God, the Creator. Therefore God cast Lucifer/satan out of heaven, along with 1/3rd of Lucifer's followers, who are pure evil. They are all anti-Christs. Do not believe their lies. Jesus Christ has won the victory over the evil one.

  41. GOD DIDN'T CREATE THE DEVIL!!!

HE MADE lucifer who became the devil by his pride, arrogance, vanity and rebellion against GOD!

This cathedral in CA is not a catholic church, it operates under the disguise of the catholic church..but it's very evident that they side with the devil and it is satan's church in disuguise..very sly and subtle way of satan...

Like Pope Paul VI said "the smoke of the devil has entered through the walls of the Vatican"

Why is the Vatican not closing these churches that does not give glory and praise to God and Our Lord Jesus???

Why do they allow so much blasphemy??? What happened to the"One and Only True Church the Catholic Church??"

I guess us catholics will just have to shut up,accept and become whimps and hide here behind these blogs to express our feelings...because else we will get a law suit for discrimination against g ays and devil worshippers..we cannot hurt the devil's feelings anymore, because state has the right to impose its views on our church's affairs..but we cannot mention God in public schools or government affairs!!!

Talk about religious freedoms and freedom of speech..only for scientists and devil worshippers...when it comes to Christ, God, we have to shut up and accept b.s in our churches!!!

It's all a BIG LIE..the so call freedom..christians are not free to express their faith in certain places in this country...a teacher cannot bering his/her bible at school//they say keep your faith at home to yourself..not in public..but yet they forced christian hospitals to give contraception or a gender change surgery, which is outrageous to our faith and God!!!

Wake up christian , stand up for our faith , our church, for Christ!!!

Let all here send our complaints to the Vatican...May be they will have the power to change things..At least our Pope should be attentive to the complaints!!!

Let just not be passive and make comments here...Go to the Vatican website and make complaints about everything weird you see in our churches here in the U.S...

WHAT A SHAME THAT WE HAVE TO BUY THE BIBLE IN CATHOLIC BOKSTORES..WITH ALL THE DONATIONS WE GIVE TO THE CHURCH IN WILLS ETC

Our church is one of the richest church in history...just look at the treasures in the Vatican itself..and yet it cannot afford to give the word of God "THE BIBLE"
    freely!!

"give freely because it was given to you freely" says the Lord Jesus..

In others don't sell God's words!!!

The Gideon gives millions of bibles every year freely and yet they are not as rich as the catholic church....

The Mormons will send you a free Christ Movie DVD and their werid bible if you call them on an 800 number!!!

Our Church sells bibles at exhorbitant prices in its book stores in the sabbath day...as well as the expensive Holy Pictures and sacramentals!!

Dear borthers and Sisters stick to the teachinsg of Christ in the Gospel and you will find the truth!!! To the knowledge of Saints like Saint Francis who was a simple man but was charitable and gave freely as Christ our Lord did!!!
Do not let crooked leaders of the church blind you!

The Church has buried the secrets of the Approved Marian apparition in La Salette..because of its specific messages about the abuse of memmbers of the clergy! Also because of its revelation of the antichrist..every catholic/christian should read it and be ready...remember what the Lord said..be alert and ready..only a few will stand to the end..and it will those who hears the truth from the Holy Spirit of God...

"The priests, ministers of my Son, the priests, by their wicked lives, by their irreverence and their impiety in the celebration of the holy mysteries, by their love of money, their love of honors and pleasures, the priests have become cesspools of impurity. Yes, the priests are asking vengeance, and vengeance is hanging over their heads. Woe to the priests and to those dedicated to God who by their unfaithfulness and their wicked lives are crucifying my Son again The sins of those dedicated to God cry out towards Heaven and call for vengeance, and now vengeance is at their door, for there is no one left to beg mercy and forgiveness for the people. There are no more generous souls, there is no one left worthy of offering a stainless sacrifice to the Eternal for the sake of the world."

"Evil books will be abundant on earth and the spirits of darkness will spread everywhere a universal slackening in all that concerns the service of God. They will have great power over nature: there will be churches built to serve these spirits. People will be transported from one place to another by these evil spirits, even priests, for they will not have been guided by the good spirit of the Gospel, which is a spirit of humility, charity and zeal for the glory of God. On occasions, the dead and the righteous will be brought back to life. (That is to say that these dead will take on the form of righteous souls which had lived on earth, in order to lead men further astray; these so-called resurrected dead, who will be nothing but the devil in this form, will preach another gospel contrary to that of the true Christ Jesus, denying the existence of Heaven; that is also to say, the souls of the damned. All these souls will appear as if fixed to their bodies).

  46. Right on David and Annielle29,
You are both absolutely right. I know you are not asking our opinion but we have been fighting Liturgical abuses and Moral Theological abuses for years so take what you find useful from the following. One way that we have found to be most effective is to write letters in the following way: 1. document the abuse. 2.List what has been violated ie: Code of Canon Law, GIRM... 3. Follow the hierarchical chain of command.
Chain of command is, first the Pastor, then the Bishop, then the Metropolitan, then the Apostolic Nuncio...then and only then you may contact the Vatican and all Congregations. Otherwise they (Congregations) will refer you to the proper Hierarchical level. We must remember that each Bishop is Prince of the Church and they take that very seriously and so should we. If you wish to circumvent all that, you can organize your parish and boycott the Chancery, direct your giving to other Catholic areas (Away from the Diocese) and let the locals know you are doing this.
All this done out of love for the Body of Christ...if not it is folly.
    Peace

I just can’t understand how Rome does nothing about this rouge Cardinal...

IF YOU WANT TO UNDERSTAND...go this page and read all the messages of the Blessed Virgin to a simple peasant girl..

It is an approved apparition of the catholic church...

It will make you understand a lot of crap that goes on in our church and we know its the devil who is doing that..by introducing his evil servants in the church...please read

    http://www.mgr.org/lasalette.html

"Churches will be locked up or desecrated. Priests and religious orders will be hunted down, and made to die a cruel death. Several will abandon the faith, and a great number of priests and members of religious orders will break away from the true religion; among these people there will even be bishops"

    To explain sexual abuse :

In convents, the flowers of the Church will decompose and the devil will make himself like the king of all hearts. May those in charge of religious communities be on their guard against the people they must receive, for the devil will resort to all this evil tricks to introduce sinners in to religious orders, for disorder and the love of carnal pleasures will be spread all over the earth.

  55. Why wouldn't a Satanist work there? Instead of the flunkie at the gift shop, look at the ones running the show, look at that place! Any Christian with any hint of discernment can take a look at that place with its trapezoids aplenty, androgynous "goddess" with sun and moon at the door, masonic/aztec relief bronze doors, blackened cross, zodiac symbols etched into the plaza, Buddhist-"Christian" prayer services, and know Satan is running that show and probably helping even with the hiring of underlings at the gift shop.

Wake up Catholics, pray to God, repent and trust in Jesus Christ alone as your Savior!

and BTW don't kid yourselves that your Pope's hands are tied in removing a "heretic" like Mahony, consider if a bishop got married he'd be out the next day. Mahony continues on unhindered!

  56. Two points:

    1. This building is hideous. An example of what the modernists are doing to destroy traditional faith by the anti-spiritual design of their modern churches.

    2. The bookstore attendant was a homosexual living with a lover and he believes Satan worship is OK.

This is a sign of a seriously sick congregation. These people are on a fast track to Hell. The priests and bishop who allowed such a situation to develop will have to answer to Almighty God - and boy will they have to answer!!!!

  57. At the beginning God create Heaven and Earth: He create the invisible and the visible, the spirituals beings and the materials beings; at last God create the human creature, who is the "bridge" beetween the two creations.

God created everything good, because He is the Goodness, He is Love, by Nature, then He can't do nothing evil.

All Angels were created good, but one thirth of them, with a chief at their head, by there free will, rebelled against God, their Criator, they wanted to be free from the source of their beings, they wanted to be free from the Freedom, Who is God, And they was close in their sins by themselves.

Then, God don't created evils, but Angels. They don't accepted the commands of LOVE. They are devils by their own guilt. And they knew, by their own nature, that they couldn't come back from their resolutions.

The devils wants only the evil, the destruction of the reign of God, from: the peoples, the families, the society; from the nations. And the truth, Jesus Cristo and His Holy Church, His Mistic Body, are very battled.
Then, can't be no acceptances from the life of satanists, who wants evil. But Jesus wants that they may be saved, He suffered the Passion and Death, and offered His Precious Blood, for their too!!!

But profanations, sacrileges, blasphemies, must be not permitted, by prudence and good sense; Jesus said also, to avoid the scandals. In cases of that must have public and private reparation.

This report on the Cathedral is a shameful and I dare say sinful bit of rash judgment.

At worst, what is described here is a couple of liberals with errant theology. As for the alleged homosexual, maybe he is, maybe his is not. That fact that he called this other man his "parter" says nothing. To assume he is a homosexual, let alone a practicing homosexual is the sin of rash judgment.

The biggest sin of rash judgment, however, is to accuse the Cathedral, and therby its rector and the Cardinal himself, of promoting Satanism.

Regardless of who the clerk was and what his beliefs or understands are, this does not constitute promotion by the Cathedral -- except maybe in yellow journalism or a bathroom wall.

In this instance two grave sins have been committed: 1) rash judgment; and 2) calumny against the rector and the Cardinal.

The writer of this article should repent of his words, apologize to the rector and the Cardinal, and post a retraction.

I say these things not because I support the Cardinal. I have many issues with the Cardinal. But justice and truth demand an airing.

  61. Dear Br. Ignatius Mary: with all due respect, I related the events described as they occurred. The implications were made by the man himself--there was very little I needed to infer anything from it. He was quite proud of his beliefs and freely expressed them, which, of course, was his right. However, he is a representative of the cathedral as an employee, and if he represents something openly and proudly that is in opposition to the Catholic Church while representing the Catholic Church, then something is out of order. Nowhere in the blog entry will you find the cardinal or the rector mentioned. Personnel problems are precisely that, and it seems that someone needs to address this one because he was indeed the public face of the cathedral to me.

  62. Pointing out that the LA cathedral and Cardinal Mahoney, book store clerks, etc., have serious defects is hardly calumny and rash judgement. If that were the case Jesus Christ would have been among the most rash...He never seemed to suffer fools, pharisees, or hypocritical high priests with calm and reason. The point is --- pretending that new age or insensible weirdness or mindless 'tolerance' is NOT going on from the top to bottom in the Archdiocese of LA -- is too turn a blind eye to an example of major problems of the American Catholic Church. The AMC represents a disconnect from common sense, never mind the Roman Church and its set of teachings. Pretending that Cardinal Mahony and his strange example of 60s views is to lie and deny what is true. Failing to point out examples of action or incaction that runs counter to church teaching or tolerance to the point of failing to defend the legacy of Jesus Christ Himself. Since when was He a whiny mush who accepted the silly behavior of the clerics of His era? To ignore what appears to be views that fly in the face of common sense - let alone church teaching - is real hypocrisy and real failure. Only those who have lost all reason or hunger for what is true and real - would fail to discern apples from toadstools. No one can judge the Cardinal's soul - that is between him and the Almighty. But it is imperative Catholics in America may have to decide if some clerics have gone over to the dippy side - if not the dark side. For me Cardinal Mahony represents bad 60s mushy non-philosophy - secular humanism that mistakes the charity of Christ for Freud and Frankfurt School of Social Theory. It is difficult to take the Cardinal, and some bishops, seriously, particularly when they routinely appear to act out of concert with the latest church teaching. As it is, the 60s generation and it's dippy - feel good pseudo social gospel according to them -- will be dead and buried - in the not too distant future. The real Gospel of Christ and meaning behind it, will survive silly cardinals or satanist buyers of books. Christ's lead re fingering those who make God look silly or in some way mock Him - is indeed -- rash. As for criticizing clerics. One famous critic comes to mind and she ended up a Saint.
Eleventh session: Wednesday, March 14, 1431 (morning)
The prisoner was asked about a warning which she had given to Bishop Cauchon. She reported her words as follows:

Joan: (to Cauchon) "You say that you are my judge; I do not know if you are: but take good heed not to judge me ill, because you would put yourself in great peril. And I warn you so that if God punish you for it, I shall have done my duty in telling you."
Cauchon was later appointed bishop of Lisieux in 1432 ((MGAV 65)), but was then accused of stealing funds destined for Rome. The Pope excommunicated him, but he defiantly continued to offer Mass. Only when the Pope threatened to make his excommunication public and depose him, did he agree to pay back the money ((SS 197)). He died in 1442.

  63. >>>That fact that he called this other man his "parter"(sic) says nothing.<<<

If he were a homosexual (with a partner) working in a Catholic Church, would that come as a surprise to you, Brother? Would it be acceptable for such a man to work in the Church, in your view?

Maybe you West-coasters have different meanings to words that we have in the Midwest” "oh, that's great, my partner would love that. He was a monk for 4 years." In Chicago, (without making value judgments) a man who would say such a thing is saying that he’s a homosexual especially when combined with the bling and the attitude.

    >>>At worst, what is described here is a couple of liberals with errant theology

No. At worst this rather insignificant story from LA is another example (admittedly a small example) of heterodoxy, loose morals and a pervasive modernist/leftist attitude that has contributed to nearly 3 billion dollars in money damages against the Catholic Church including over $660 million and counting from LA.

That’s more than enough and those of us who have contributed our own money to the Church and have now learned that we are the chumps who are paying these money damages, INSIST that the nonsense stops NOW. Ordaining or hiring men who have even a hint of SSA is not acceptable. In addition, criminal bishops ought to be prosecuted and punished if found guilty. They certainly ought not to be given a pass or be sent to Rome and made Archpriests of major cathedrals.

Pray for them if you wish. Make novenas, do mortifications, wear sackcloth and ashes, stand on your head, do whatever you want for them but they must get the heck out of the Church before they do even more damage. I love Aquinas and Augustine but their lofty theology is not needed when this question is simply a matter of common sense and dollars and cents.

  64. Br. Ignatius--it is possible you are right. Maybe this store worker meant his ping pong partner, business partner, canasta partner, swing dance partner, or celibate-but-committed life partner. However, given the conventional meaning that "my partner" has, esp. in southern California, the man should have at least been more careful about his word choice if he meant something else.

  65. Regarding post number 20 - anonymous said "It is a very routine practice in California, especially the San Jose area for priests, seminarian students and other religious men to live with a male "partner". Many of the clergy openly participate in the gay culture of that area. Cardinal Mahoney is aware of this and actually indirectly encourages this."

I'm afraid you don't really know what you're talking about. San Jose is not in the LA diocese - it is it's own diocese far away from LA. I know the vocations director and he is a rock-solid priest and so are the seminarians he is sheparding.

Spare us the judgement c-rap. You plainly judged us by saying we're being so without giving us the benefit of the doubt.

WE KNOW WHAT WE ARE TALKING ABOUT, and, yes, the mention of "partner" here in SoCal and in any major metro area means just that, that the guy in Cathedral bookstore is a flamer.

She clearly states that there will be a lot of wickedness among the members of the clergy...

Anyway the bible clearly states "if your brother sin, rebukes him, if he does not listen take some more members of the church and rebuke him publicly.. and if does not repent shake the dust of your feet upon him"

The problem today is that the church want6s us to shut up and accept all the evil that is prevailing in our church..if you read the secret messages of La Salette, you should know as a
catholic that a Bishop will raise the anti-christ who will be born out of a fake hebrew nun. An that the seat of Rome will be occupied by the anti-christ...so don't you think that the writer is being harsh on the cardinal who is allowing such nonsense architecture in our church and recruiting such immoral person like the store clerk and the anti-catholic architect.

To defend those of narcissistic and emotional immaturities is leading them further into darkness and backing their bonding with satan. Good work there brother! Explain it, when your time comes, to the Christ you justify placing in same context with satan!

One simple way to find out if this guy belongs as a rep. to the public in a Roman Catholic Cathedral (and supposedly being paid for it) is to simply examine him due to complaints as to his preaching that the Catholic Church (in THIS particular facade or not) allows satan worship in its teachings or places it in some equal place next to worshipping the Christ that satan is in opposition towards. If he continues and does not recant, then boot him. Get some discernment, brother, and then request some fortitude to combat such satanic infiltrations. IOW, be a man!

  81. If I may jump in for a moment.....

I grew up in a suburb of LA and was raised in its churches. As a former So-Cal La'er currently living in the Midwest, I can 100% confirm the experiences related in this blog.

1- Everything the bookstore clerk said is a clear statement of his homosexuality. It's obvious. Anyone from SoCal knows EXACTLY what he meant. There's no gray area when it comes to that! To say we're inferring something that may or may not be true ... is... making the assumption that we don't know our hometown. We're natives. Outsiders would do well to respect that natives know their native culture.

2- In regards to Satanism and it's relationship with the LA Archdiocese (and the cathedral in particular), these are common statements and not so surprising if you're from there. It's a shock to everyone else, but not to people who have to deal with it day in and day out. In LA, there's only 2 kinds of catholics.... ultra-ultra-ultra "liberal" (meaning the original true meaning of that term has been so far perverted that it is no longer recognizable) or ultra-ultra-ultra conservative/traditional. It has to be that way, because in order to survive in the middle you would have to be a saint. Most of the rest of us are humans in process of becoming one, so are therefore left with swinging to the other "extreme" while seeking the balance.

The "liberals" fully embrace the "concept" that there are no concepts and to state anything as truth other than what you feeeeel is anathema and not worthy of consideration. What's up is down, what's black is white... you get the picture. Not only do they embrace it, but the automatic assumption made by them, is "well, heck, doesn't everybody else believe the same thing?" It's a duty for them to instruct anyone not educated in these principles. By the way, LA is 100% liberal, with the exception of law enforcement. They're the only ones who seem to get it, and even then.... lol, even then the LA mindset is so invasive that they'll spout the LA party line. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, it is true... there IS an LA party line. This blog is tame... tame... tame. I thought the blogger was understating the matter and communicating in a light and humourous manner, something that is deeply disturbing but not uncommon.

3- For Br. Ignatius, I appreciate your desire to bring equanimity and fairness into a situation that SCREAMS for an answer. I know where you're coming from, but ... this is a situation that SCREAMS for accountability. LA needs it desperately. Mahoney needs to be called on the carpet... St. Catherine of Siena.. where are you?? Bless you in your ministry, and please pray for the rest of us. But please understand that there's a lot more involved here than you may be aware of. Things that DEMAND clear, open communication of ugly truths.

4- I'm glad I'm in the Midwest. It's given me the opportunity to chill out for a bit and get out of the frontline spiritual hell that is LA. It's given me a deep appreciation for my fellow catholics living and fighting there, as well as greater clarity that noone really gets what's going on there unless they've lived and worked there. Everyone in America has had tastes of it, but it's not the same. Take whatever you've experienced and multiple by like.... 1000% ... or more.

To the Cali solid catholic crew, I will be joining you again soon. Thanks for hanging in there. I'm not going in blind, and I'm coming back with a fresh perspective and tons of spiritual support. Fellow troops find relief. =)

    Sincerely,
    In Mary,

It seems that the answer to the oh-too-easy-to-answer question at the end of this goes like this: Cardinal Mahony names the cathedral rector, the cathedral rector oversees someone who does the hiring at the gift shop. But ultimately the buck stops with the cardinal.

    August 21, 2008 10:09 PM
    ----------------------------------
    Seems simple, no??
Nothing is simple in LA. The place is a quagmire of discombobulated goo.

    Try this...
imagine yourself walking along a brightly lit luxuriant path, and all of a sudden you step into quicksand. As your body gets sucked slowly into it's depths (or quickly depending on how much you struggle) and the air is slowly compressed out of your lungs, you begin to experience a sense of vertigo. Dizziness sets in. A sense of unreality sets in. If you can stay clear enough to keep your arm out of the sand, be able to assess the situation, and clearly eyeball a tool to assist you in getting out... you will die.

That... is a metaphor for what it's like to be a loving, practicing catholic in LA. Calling a spade a spade is one of those tools. Acknowledging the role Mahoney is playing is another.

  83. 'M' is correct.

It all starts at the head office holder, in this case Roger Michael Mahony, Hollwood liberal, who, with the help of his twin brother, and older brother, campaigned and bribed his way (to John Paul II - NO SAINT who appointed the vast majority of these criminal enablers)to the title of Cardinal in corrupt the very LA Archdiocese.

Remember there was a thriving pedo-sexual assault ring under Tim Manning, run by his Vicar General (Pedophile Himself) Benjamin Hawkes, when Mahony arrived in 1985, and Mahony did NOTHING to shut it down, knowing kids and teens were regularly being assaulted, other than to criminally cover it up, and beat the statute of limitations on each case.

Mahony oftens touts his liberal credentials in pandering to Latinos (for revenue), that "he was there side by side with Cesar Chavez", via laity paid for PR Firms, creating the UFW...yeah right, and I have some rotting produce to sell you also.

'M', as a name, reminds me also of Judi Dench, in the role as James Bond (Pierce Bronson's) boss, in her correct assertion.

Yes, indeed, The LA RC Church must be "shaken, no stirred" from the top, to rid it of incarnate EVIL office holders like Rog Mahal Mahony...the worst of the worst...making Bernie Law look quite good by actual body counts and costs soaked to laity from their crime sprees.

I believe it was St. Paul (5:11) to the Ephesians, who remined each of us: "Do no deal in fruitless deeds of darkness, but expose them."

More recently, Edmund Burke, 18th century historian suggested: "The only condition for evil to triumph is for good men (or women) to do nothing."

Well, if you are blogging, at least your are doing something, however, ceasing all monetary donations, being diverted to save Roger's soulless hide, is indeed preventing you from committing a MORTAL SIN.

Go With God, But Keep Your Wallets Zipped Closed Laity!

Despite my moniker, I have been blessed with 11 children and am a devout, by the book (Catholic Catechism) Catholic. However, I'm very disturbed by how UN-Catholic most of my friends and many post-ers (bloggers) are becoming. It's so...Republican and mean-spirited. Are we going to stand at the door of our Churches and ask Catechism questions of each individual before they are allowed access? Are we going to require that our priests look for an "Imprimatur of Approval Sticker" placed by a spiritual council on each person seeking the Body & Blood of Christ?
It's long been my understanding that God can handle all of this without us. If someone receives unworthily, and knowingly, that sin is on him or her. I am not bothered by the presence of gays at Mass--what better place for them to be on Sunday morning? How hateful for us to condemn them and wish they were home in bed sipping lattes and eating bagels while reading the New York Times.
Honestly, I really don't think Jesus would like us as a group much at all. Supposedly all this bashing is done in God's name, but I don't buy it. And, yes, I've heard all the justifications, but they're just that, justifications. I am concerned only for my own sins and while I allow the priest his homily, I will not become the preacher. I will do what Jesus asked and love God first and others second. He said that was all that is required. Remember?

If there is a better example of a Prince Of The Church, long ago having sold his immortal soul to The Devil than Roger Mahony, I am unaware of it; and when alive, I majored in Church history at The Gregorian.

It is Mahony, and his pedophile and crimnal minor sexual assault crew, as well as laity paid for lawyer tribe, insurance carriers, and PR spin agencies, who perfected and use, on these blog sites, the "Catholic Bashing" and "Gay Bashing" false deflection devices, to feably attempt to draw attention away from their ongoing spree of felonies, all at laity body count and cost, in multiple BILLIONS OF DOLLARS, uncorrected.

There are certainly few poor in spirit or wealth, those who mourn, meek, righteous, hungry, merciful, pure of heart, peace makers, or persecuted, among the current Roman Catholic Curia, or hiearchy.

If you "are concerned only about your own sins" you better stop donating to this molty crew of curia felons, because it is indeed a clear and present MORTAL SIN on your soul, to be overtly, or tacitly, supporting them.

May God Have Mercy On These Criminals, For Their Is NONE Among His Sheep, Saints, & True Chosen.

    Ciao e pace,

  86. Dear Activist Mom--your call is well heard. There are a lot of uncharitable comments made here. However, that does not undo the fact that we are discussing a representative of the cathedral speaking the opposite of what the Church teaches. Certainly everyone is welcome at Mass--provided that they desire to grow in holiness and be conformed to Christ. And if they have no such desire--even the smallest bit--then their attempt is either a political statement or something worse. Loving those who are in error is exactly the solution here, but loving them does not mean allowing them to persist in sin or worse yet, boast of their sin and error in public while representing the Church. It is for the legitimate authorities in charge at the cathedral and the bookshop to deal with this, which is the reason to bring it up at all.

And, by the way, it is mean-spirited to say that "Republican" = "mean-spirited."

Touche! (don't know how to make the symbol over the e in that) I take that correction, as you are, of course, correct and I was making an unfair generalization. You also stated "Loving those who are in error is exactly the solution here, but loving them does not mean allowing them to persist in sin or worse yet, boast of their sin and error in public while representing the Church. It is for the legitimate authorities in charge at the cathedral and the bookshop to deal with this, which is the reason to bring it up at all."
This is an excellent point, but I felt the author was getting off message a bit. If we focus only on this intent, it would be a wonderful focus in all of our parishes. I am unfamiliar with Mahoney; I live in the Chicago archdiocese. I do agree that the Catholic Church should hire workers who are held to high standards of Catholicism...but in our Catholic bookstore, some of the ladies are not even Catholic! That's right--they're Episcopalians! I guess OUR Bishop is thinking ahead of himself??? It would be funny if it weren't so sad. ::sigh::

  88. Activist Mom--Episcopalians at the gift shop are not inherently a problem. However, if they start speaking publicly about their own reasons for not being Catholic in a derogatory tone and promote devil worship, then there might be a reason to talk with them about appropriate comportment as an employee. I can be darn sure that an AT&T worker would be reprimanded for critiquing AT&T products and promoting those of Sprint, no matter what his private beliefs are. The same ideas are at work here, although it is much more serious. At some point, something needs to be done about it.

  89. Truth in advertising should demand a sign at the entrance of the Rog 'Mahal' Mahony, aka OLA:

"Abandon all hope, who enter here."

    Dante Aligheri

    At the Mahal Gift Shop:

"All through the shadows they come and they go, they all have one thing in common, they've got the FIRE down below."

Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band

    In the Mahal Sky Boxes:

Reinstate the sign that was on Rog's headstone under date of death: "NOT SOON ENOUGH"

    In the Mahal Chopper Pad:

"Sky Pilot! How High Can You Fly?
You'll Never, Never, Never Reach The Sky..."

    The Animals

  90. Partnered-jewelry-wearing clerk asside, the parishoners were absolutely right. ALL are welcome in church. Every single living breathing person is welcome. That is always how it is/was/shall be. We as Christians are called to "preach to all who will listen." If such people show up to church willing to listen, then we have a moral obligation to minister to them. This does NOT mean we allow them to partake in the eucharist (I for one am of the opinion we should return to the early church custom of having non-Christians leave before consecration) nor does it mean we allow them to use our churches or facilities for their own purposes. But welcome them? Of course. It is our duty.

  91. It is interesting that Bro Ignatius has made no reply to what d mac had had said . Maybe someone from a relglious order should think more and look at the facts of what has been shown. Bro Ignatius should concentrate on his vocation and more prayer rather than internet blogs.

  92. Deusdonat:

"Welcome To HELL, Parson!" Ben Rumson's (played by Lee Marvin in the movie version of PAINT YOUR WAGON)line, to the inviting, but fire & brimstone, Preacher, upon being swallowed up alive to the nether regions, under No Name City.

Your view of the Rog Mahal smacks
    of complete self-delusion.

Should you be welcoming armed axe murderers, Jidahist with bombs trapped to themselves to kill Christians (or what passes for them in OLA), how about active pedophiles raping & sodomizing kids in the pews? O, I gues we KNOW the answet on the last example..don't we ROGER!?

    STOP DONATING LAITY!
