1.5 Billion Facemasks Will Pollute Oceans This Year

NY Post:

More than 1.5 billion disposable face masks will wind up in the world’s oceans this year — polluting the water with tons of plastic and endangering marine wildlife, according to a Hong Kong-based environmental group.

report by OceansAsia cites a global market research report that estimates 52 billion masks were made this year to meet the demand caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

It also says that a “conservative” calculation means at least 3 percent of them will be washed out to sea.

“Single-use face masks are made from a variety of meltblown plastics and are difficult to recycle due to both composition and risk of contamination and infection,” the report says.

“These masks enter our oceans when they are littered or otherwise improperly discarded, when waste management systems are inadequate or non-existent, or when these systems become overwhelmed due to increased volumes of waste.”

The good news is that if the fish and birds get the masks wrapped around them, at least they'll be safe from the coronavirus, unless, of course, they go near another fish or bird that doesn't have a mask. So maybe the answer is more pollution. #science

Of course, if a fish or a bird gets caught up in a mask and dies, it will be listed as a Covid death. But at least it didn't happen in a nursing home so Andrew Cuomo is in the clear.

  1. Now that Hong Kong's CCP resistance has been crushed via the CCP virus, it seems to me that this is more Chinese propaganda. What is OceansAsia's relationship with the CCP (Chinese Communist Party)?

Ultimately, I like your take which is to laugh at this.

(The CCP should have more guilt than any Catholic; however, the CCP has crushed the underground Church via Mr. McCarrick so they won't be truly enlightened anytime soon.)
